  3. Analytical Method in Teaching Chinese

To learn the Chinese language fast one should follow analytical principles. Despite of the trend of a book the main idea is still the same – to teach the students to speak Chinese! The analysis starts from the text itself. It is broken down into syntagmas with word-for-word translation. Then syntagmas are divided into words. The words are splitted into characters and, finally, the characters are decomposed into the Chinese radicals and components. Thus, a student can follow the analytical path in the Chinese language and understand all the constituents of the studying text. Let us see how analytical principles are implemented in the short example of the Chinese commercial email: 我们正在联系供应商, 我们 wǒmen we, 正在 zhèngzài in the process of, 联系 liánxì connection, 供应商 gōngyìngshāng supplier, 供应 gōngyìng supply, 商 shāng commerce, 4. 并等待他们的报价, 并 bìng and, 等待 děngdài wait for, 他们的 tāmende their, 他们 tāmen they, 的 de possessive, modifying, or descriptive particle, 报价 bàojià quoted price, 5. 一有消息会马上通知您! 一 yī as soon as, 有 yǒu have, 消息 xiāoxi information, 会 huì be able to, 马上 mǎshàng at once, 通知 tōngzhī inform, 您 nín you, 6. 盼复为谢!罗生 盼复 pànfù expecting reply, 盼 pàn expect, 复 fù reply to a letter, 为 wéi be, 谢 xiè thank, 罗生 luóshēng Chinese personal name Luosheng, 罗 luó surname Luo, collect, 生 shēng life, 1 报 bào report, 2 并 bìng and, 3 车 chē vehicle, 4 待 dài stay, 5 的 de possessive, modifying, or descriptive particle, 6 等 děng wait, 7 复 fù reply to a letter, 8 供 gōng supply, 9 好 hǎo good, 10 会 huì be able to, 11 价 jià price, 12 姐 jiě elder sister, 13 卡 kǎ card, 14 联 lián unite, 15 罗 luó surname, collect, 16 马 mǎ horse, 17 们 men plural marker for pronouns, 18 您 nín you, 19 盼 pàn expect, 20 商 shāng commerce, 21 上 shàng go up, 22 生 shēng life, 23 孙 sūn surname Sun, grandson, 24 他 tā he, 25 通 tōng connect, 26 为 wéi be, 27 我 wǒ I, 28 息 xī breath, 29 系 xì system, 30 消 xiāo spend, 31 小 xiǎo small, 32 谢 xiè thank, 33 型 xíng type, 34 一 yī as soon as, 35 应 yìng answer, 36 有 yǒu have, 37 在 zài particle indicating an action in progress, 38 正 zhèng straight, 39 知 zhī know, 40 重 zhòng heavy, Such analytical approach is perfectly implemented in each of Polina Shinkina’s books. 5. The Structural Logic of the Chinese Character

Do you think that the Chinese character decomposition can speed up the process of developing writing skills and, consequently, memorization of the Chinese character? It looks simplier to learn Chinese writing with the help of ready ‘blocks’, I mean radicals and components, rather than the stroke order of the character. In fact, if a Chinese character understood structurally, it might be recalled easily and written without any difficulties. The Chinese character decomposition shows the structural logic of the character. Here is an example how the decomposition of the Chinese character simplifies the whole idea of studying the Chinese language. Decomposition of the Chinese character 畁 bì ‘give, allow’, 由 tián field, 囗 wéi enclosure, 冂 jiōng down box, 十 shí ten, 一 yī one, 丨 gǔn line, 一 yī one 由 囗 冂 十 一 丨 一 NB. Synonyms: Structural analysis of the Chinese characters, Breakdown of the Chinese characters, Chinese characters split. 7. Learning decomposition of the Chinese characters form the Chinese character stable perception habits and its immediate cognition in other contexts. Moreover, the Chinese language teacher will be saved from inventing different kind of associations of the Chinese character with its meaning. The easiest way to learn complicated Chinese characters with abstract meanings is analysis of such characters from the point of view of its decomposition - learning all components and radicals with all their readings and meanings. The Chinese character decomposition and analysis requires knowing of radicals. The Chinese radicals are learnt at the introductory lessons once and forever. It is like the alphabet which is learnt only once. Evaluation and recognition of the Chinese character from the point of view of its structural analysis and decomposition creates stable writing habits and immediate perception of the Chinese character in different contexts. The example of the Chinese character decomposition - the decomposition of the Chinese character 意 yì “meaning”: 音 yīn sound 立 lì stand 亠 tóu lid 丶 zhǔ dot 一 yī one 丷 bā eight 一 yī one 曰 yuē say 冂 jiōng down box 二 èr two 心 xīn heart 丿 piě slash 乚 yǐ second 丶 zhǔ dot 丶 zhǔ dot 音立亠丶一丷一曰冂二 心丿乚丶丶 More Chinese commercial, marketing, financial and contract texts for reading are available on Polina Shinkina’s Author Spotlight Page http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/polina985 The Chinese Character Decomposition Guidance is available on http://www.lulu.com/content/e-book/the-chinese-character-decomposition-guidance/18847104
  8. Knowing the meaning of the Chinese character is absolutely significant, especially at the initial stage of the Chinese language learning. Pay attention to not overloading each character with the meanings. One meaning per each Chinese character is quite enough at the starting point of learning. In case the Chinese character is met for the first time the mind needs to create and link the writing of the Chinese character with one of its meanings. Other meanings of the same Chinese character can be presented during the following lessons when this character is met in the new contexts. 1 把 bǎ marker for direct-object 2 报 bào report 3 变 biàn change 4 产 chǎn produce 5 常 cháng often 6 场 chǎng ground 7 称 chēng call 8 答 dá answer 9 到 dào arrive 10 的 de possessive, modifying, or descriptive particle 11 都 dōu entirely 12 发 fā send out 13 非 fēi wrong 14 复 fù reply 15 刚 gāng strong 16 高 gāo tall 17 格 gé check 18 个 gè classifier for people or objects in general 19 给 gěi give 20 规 guī rule 21 果 guǒ fruit 22 过 guò pass through 23 汉 hàn Chinese 24 行 háng place 25 好 hǎo good 26 合 hé join 27 很 hěn very 28 化 huà change 29 话 huà if 30 会 huì can 31 及 jí and 32 价 jià price 33 建 jiàn build 34 件 jiàn correspondence 35 尽 jǐn most 36 快 kuài fast 37 来 lái come 38 刘 liú surname Liu, fringe 39 笼 lǒng cover 40 满 mǎn full 41 么 me what, interrogative particle 42 没 méi not 43 每 měi every 44 们 men plural marker for pronouns 45 名 míng name 46 能 néng can 47 您 nín you 48 品 pǐn article 49 情 qíng feeling 50 如 rú if 51 若 ruò if 52 什 shén what 53 市 shì city 54 收 shōu accept 55 所 suǒ particle introducing a relative clause 56 天 tiān sky 57 统 tǒng command 58 望 wàng hope 59 为 wèi for 60 我 wǒ I 61 息 xī breath 62 希 xī hope 63 细 xì thin 64 现 xiàn present 65 相 xiāng mutually 66 详 xiáng detailed 67 想 xiǎng think 68 信 xìn believe 69 兴 xìng prosper 70 需 xū need 71 要 yào want 72 也 yě also 73 一 yī one 74 义 yì meaning 75 意 yì meaning 76 议 yì opinion 77 因 yīn because 78 邮 yóu post 79 与 yǔ together with 80 在 zài particle indicating an action in progress 81 作 zuò work More information you can find in Polina Shinkina’s textbooks on http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/polina985
