A parenthesis is a grammatically-irrelevant yet stylistically-important remark added to create emphasis, in which the emphatic effect can only be achieved by comma encapsulation. Also, a post-comma is needed when &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; is used at the end of the first clause in either a compound or complex sentence, as long as the complex sentence starts with a dependent clause.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Understanding the meaning and function of &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Suddenly&rdquo; is an adverb that works similarly with &ldquo;immediately&rdquo; which can be used to modify verbs, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/u.osu.edu\/uofye\/2014\/07\/21\/35-adjectives-to-describe-my-first-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>adjectives<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or other adverbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/linguaholic.com\/linguablog\/comma-usage-in-particular\/\"><b>In particular<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; is used to denote an occurrence of an activity or event that happens quickly and unexpectedly.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-note\" style=\"border-color:#e5e54c;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#FFFF66;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">She suddenly appeared out of nowhere.<\/div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; in the example above means that an element of surprise is intended to be described.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or, put simply, it is used to describe the sneaky and spooky act done by the subject in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linguaholic.com\/linguablog\/comma-after-e-g\/\"><b>the example<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another sense, it could also be used to refer to time bearing the meaning &ldquo;sooner than what has been anticipated.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-note\" style=\"border-color:#e5e54c;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#FFFF66;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">The storm came suddenly.<\/div><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/linguaholic.com\/linguablog\/how-to-use-whether-or-not-in-a-sentence\/\"><b>Whether<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you are using &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; to refer to time or manner, the rather stable meaning of the word generally does not create misinterpretation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, a misplaced comma certainly will. So, let us now talk about commas in more detail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Placing a comma after &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; in ample detail<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commas are generally used to organize messy ideas logically and cohesively, not to mention prosodically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/linguaholic.com\/linguablog\/comma-before-or-after-although\/\"><b>Although<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there seem to be too many rules and terms to consider when deciding on comma placement, punctuation skills can always be improved by constant writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you keep writing, you won&rsquo;t even have to think of the so-called &ldquo;rules&rdquo; allows the reader to take a quick break before getting into the main idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, the comma also helps in making sentences more readable and easier to digest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>When &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; is used in a compound sentence<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A compound sentence is made up of two independent clauses linked by a coordinating conjunction, such as &ldquo;and,&rdquo; in this type of sentence construction.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-note\" style=\"border-color:#e5e54c;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#FFFF66;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">And then, suddenly, she felt even more apathetic than before.<\/div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The commas above enable the reader to take a couple of breaks which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linguaholic.com\/linguablog\/comma-before-then\/\"><b>then<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prompts the brain into the story-telling mode, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linguaholic.com\/linguablog\/comma-before-rather\/\"><b>rather<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than interpreting it as a formal statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>No comma is needed after &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo;, when&hellip;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This section is a list of the considerations to take in not placing an after-comma to &ldquo;suddenly.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bear in mind that the instances below do not meet any of the criteria on comma placement elaborated earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must not place a post-comma when &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; functions as an ordinary adverb whose job is to modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These cases, again, should not meet any of the criteria mentioned <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linguaholic.com\/linguablog\/such-as-in-a-sentence\/\"><b>such as<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an introductory element, compound or complex sentence forms, and parentheses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linguaholic.com\/linguablog\/comma-before-albeit\/\"><b>albeit<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> possible to insert one, comma non-placement is often observed in statements using &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; that contains very weak interrupting power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&rsquo;s take a closer look at each one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>When &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; modifies a verb<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main task of adverbs of manners like &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; is to modify actions or verbs in a sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When this happens, putting a comma makes the sentence confusing and grammatically-awkward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&rsquo;s the correct way of modifying a verb with &ldquo;suddenly.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-note\" style=\"border-color:#e5e54c;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#FFFF66;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">She suddenly started crying.<\/div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an adverb of manner, the modifying focus of &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; is directed to the verb, providing the meaning that the act of crying unexpectedly occurred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>When&ldquo;suddenly&rdquo; modifies an adjective<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another function of adverbs is to modify adjectives, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linguaholic.com\/linguablog\/which-vs-what\/\"><b>which<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also possible with &ldquo;suddenly.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When &ldquo;suddenly&rdquo;
