Trellum got a reaction from GaeilgeGirl in What's your favourite word in a language that isn't your native one?
For me it would be ''Ranchu'' :3  It's a word used to describe a type of goldfish that originated in China, but was further developed to look like it looks today in Japan.  Needless to say  this has increased (and also the fact I've been watching a ot Vlogs about Mexican women living in Japan lately) my interest in Japanese   Just look at them:

My fascination with Asian cultures keeps growing and growing, who knows, I might feel like adding Chinese to my list in the future   Right after Japanese, of course   Another words I like are:

    - Iris
    - Gezelig
    - Farfalla
    - Skal

I am starting this thread because a member mentioned he was interested in learning this language    For those who don't know it, the ''ladino'' language is a dying language,  and is the language of the Sephardic jews.   I'm one of them, and this language used to be a big part of our culture, but sadly most ladino speakers are old people... and the younger generation of Sephardi Jews don't speak it.   The language is basically a mix of  (old) Spanish and Hebrew, but depending on where the speaker lives some words from Greek, Turkish, and Arabic are often borrowed.

I am creating this thread in hopes I can add more and more resources to learn this language, not immediately but little by little, also depending on the interest of others to learn this language.

Oh no!!!   Why is it taking so long?  Where are you taking your exam?    So sorry about the late reply   I didn't see this until now!   I'll tell you about my experience.  You see, right after paying the fees they sent us both an e-mail letting us know we had  to e-mail  the embassy and ask what dates were available.  I did, he told me whole December was available.  So I picked December 3.  If I recall right I did this one month ahead.  I was called by an embassy employee one day before the exam, to confirm my appointment and to let me know they'd not be able to see me at the time we had agreed.

Long story short:  the day of the exam came.   They made me wait one hour or so   But ok, I used that time to study.   I remember it was a Friday when I finally got my results.  It was December 18, a cold evening.  They let us know through e-mail, then they told us we could proceed with the MVV application.  It took me and my fiance a while to gather all the papers we needed, but we did. He mailed the application (feb 17), then made the payment (feb 29).  It was until march 26 we got a letter from the IND letting us know my MVV had been approved, all I had to do was going to Mexico city to pick it up.

I son't know if in your country they do it the same way... but  traveling to the embassy to get my MVV wasn't easy.  I had to get my passport picture taken there, because I couldn't find a decent photographer who could comply with all the requisites the IND was asking.  So yeah... make sure to get your passport picture taken at the photo studio they recommend in the embassy's web site, otherwise they will not accept your application.

In my case I had to leave my passport at the embassy,  I have heard it's like this for everyone.  I got it back 8 days later... with my visa in one of its pages   It looks like a stamp   A very fancy one   Valid for only 3 months.  By the way,  if you come from another part of the country, you will have to buy a shipping label so you can get your passport back.  Take copies of everything you want to keep, otherwise they will keep the originals.

If you want to know more about the exam... let me know.  And yes, it's true what I heard about those exercises being removed.  Be careful though... they use words that you are not even taught in the course... that is the reason I got a 9 in the reading exam

    Hi Trellum,
Congratulations on passing your Inburgering exam!
I'll be taking the same exam too, but I'm so disappointed that it takes 2 months to wait for an exam date... So many things were delayed on my side and we have no choice now but to wait and wait. How long did it take for the exam results to come in for you? And did it take long for the mvv to be approved?
Wishing you best of luck on your Dutch lessons!

PS: Thanks for the tips! Will check out that link shortly.

Sending many hugs right back to you!!   Yes,  actually we had to go through this 3 times (the waiting for someone to decide our faith), first: when I was waiting for the results of my Inburgering examen (they sent my results to the Netherlands so native Dutch people would examine it and yada yada). The second time was when he hadto gather  (as well as me) a bunch of papers... I sent mine through FedEX.  He gathered his own too, sent them to the IND (immigration) then we waited... I think it was two months or so.  They could have just rejected it.  It's ridiculous, because just when we thought we were done we had to wait again after I had to travel to Mexico city to submit the rest of the papers (when will this all end? LOL)  and again we had to wait.  Only 8 days though   Looking back... no wonder I was so grumpy, lol.

I feel so much relief... now I just want to live my life, not thinking about tomorrow and treasure every second.  I think you know the feeling so well!  I wish you  a lot happiness to you and your husband!  We deserve it after ALLL those hardships!  We really do!  This kind of relationships are not for everyone   I  mean, look at all the ''trials'' we have gone through, and I'm not talking only about visas and paperwork, but things like the cultural differences and dealing with our husband's families.  But real love conquers it all!

OMG OMG Trellum...Congratulations!!! What did I say, have a little faith and it'll happen!! Oh I'm so happy for you I tell you, people who have never gone through this just don't realise how difficult and nerve wracking it can be, waiting for someone to decide your fate. Now you and your husband-to-be can relax and just get on with your lives. Enjoy it, you've earned it and fully deserve it.
I'm glad to say my husband also got his a few months ago and the relief is just immeasurable  I mean, people were being rejected left, right and centre. So it was a bit of a miracle, really. We can now relax for a few years, too. Sending you many hugs

I already got my MVV    I got it last Friday    I am just happy this is over, no more trips alone to Mexico city and such.  I think that is why we had so many arguments, I was so stressed about going there alone, making sure all papers were in order, and I was forgetting nothing.  While my fiance was not doing so much, at least not as much as I did (he sent the application via post in his country - while I had to go personally to submit mine ).   I think I resent him a lot, unconsciously of course because now I can tell the difference     I am glad to hear you are your husband are doing better!  I hope to reach that stage soon, because the idea of moving to another country so soon really scares me.

I feel better knowing there are others in a similar situation, because  being in this kind of relationships  is never easy (I have heard it gets easier after a while), but  love conquers all   We have had a couple arguments since then, mostly triggered by stress (I had to travel to a very big city on my own and spend the night there).   Things seem to be much better now because we are both calmer, now we are just waiting for my MVV

Thank you very much, that is very nice of you.  And yeah, interpersonal relationships can be so rewarding, but at the same time so taxing.  Specially when you are not so sure how to deal with certain situations and certain types of people, but I like to think I'm getting better at that, and also at controlling my emotions   Is not easy though, but I do think it's worth the effort.

The best example I can give you is the language of my people, I'm talking of ''Ladino'', the language spoken by the sephardi jews.  Our language is dying, right now is only spoken in Israel by a few grandmothers, but you can find a few places where you can learn it.  Still, less and less young people are showing interest in it. I honestly think this language is going to die out soon.  It's sad but true, very few living speakers.  When the last ladino speaking grandma in Israel dies... that will surely be it.  Sadly this is something bound to happen.

Don't beat yourself up too much, Trellum, we all say hurtful things in the heat of the moment from time to time! I know the sad thing's that you can't take it back, but if your fiancé has forgiven you, you need to try and move on from it too. I too have over the years learnt to breathe and keep a cool head before reacting, and this has really helped me stay calm. The bottomline is, we're all human and we will stumble and make mistakes from time to time. I hope that thing between you guys get better

This is my opinion... I honestly wouldn't like it if we all spoke one language... it sounds almost as ad as having a single world government.  Imagine that?  My biggest fear... yikes!  Plus what would happen with our cultures?  Because our mother languages are a big part of our cultures...   so if we had a single language being spoken all around the world I think we would be losing so much.  Plus where would be the fun in that?  Can't think of anything more boring that one single language for everyone     I hope that never happens to be honest.

I don't manage to censor myself completely most of the time   But lately I've been trying very hard to do that and do it better, mostly because I've had a lot issues with my fiance lately and I really want things to be better.  So I figured out that staying as cam as possible was the goal, because well... right after saying something regretful I felt awful the whole day. Like those words were resonating in my head and felt so guilty, even though they weren't that bad, but I knew I should have controlled myself better.

I hate it when people put you down for wanting to learn another language. When I was just beginning to learn Spanish a lot of people would make fun of me for not saying words properly. I didn't get why they were being so rude. I thought they would be happy to know that I wanted to learn their language.

I totally agree with you. Name calling is just rude, no matter if it is done out of a joke or not. And that is especially true for someone struggling to speak an unfamiliar language, because it may make you loose confidence in yourself and may make you think that you are not really good at what you are trying to do.

Hi guys!  Sorry if the title of this thread sounds  confusing,  but today something happened and made me feel upset.  Do you guys think that name calling while practicing a language, even if done as a joke is acceptable?  To me this behavior is not acceptable at all. Specially if it comes from someone who is supposed to help you learn/practice the language, when you respect someone you don't randomly utter disrespectful names like ''stupid''. That is just a big no no.   This is not acceptable in any other circumstance either.
This is specially bad if it's done in a language you are just learning!  Not very motivating, is it?  So this person (won't say who it is) thought that because I'm not fluent enough he could get away with calling me names in Dutch. No matter in what language you do it, calling someone stupid out of the blue just like that, even if it's done as a ''joke'' is so disrespectful.
I'd normally think nothing of it, but this was done by someone close to me.  If it had been done by a random stranger well... It'd not have affected me at all.   Has something like this ever happened to you?  How did you react (supposing you realized you were being insulted, of course)?

To be honest I don't take that as an insult    I was told that several times whenever my mom told people I learnt English completely on my own without books or a language course.  I didn't use a dictionary either. I learnt English thanks to Yahoo chat rooms.  First I was just paying attention to what people wrote and said, after a bit I started participating and then I started exchanging e-mails with native English speakers.  After 6 months I already wrote English decent enough, speaking it took me a bit longer because I've always been a shy person.  Then I met my now ex and I started to feel more confident, I was 17 years old.  I'm still improving my English   Some people are good with languages, specially if they are young, but I believe anyone can learn a language if they truly want it.
