Thanks for the tips. I would also like to point out that if you watch movies or tv shows or read novels that are in English, you can easily pick up a couple of idiomatic phrases there which in turn, you can imitate as you converse in everyday life.

I would also agree to what has been suggested, you should just go along with Spanish, because lots of countries speak it, so it would be more useful than Italian or French, which is spoken by a lesser number of people compared to Spanish.

I think interest counts more than intelligence when it comes to learning a new language, because even if you're intelligent, if you're not interested, then you won't learn anything. Of course, you also have to be determined and persistent to be able to be fluent in the language of your choice, aside from being interested in it.

Yes you do have a point there. Reading children's books are so simply written, you will easily understand and translate it to your native language so that you can understand it. I think you don't even have to go to your local library to find them. You can easily find them online in pdf form if you just google it.

If you like the Spanish language in general, then why don't you try listening to some Latin artists that sing English or Spanglish songs like Ricky Martin or Enrique Iglesias? I'm pretty sure you will find their songs nice and catchy.

I have liked Rammstein, a German band, because of their beat, so ever since I discovered their music, I developed an interest in their language. But apart from German, I would also listen to Spanish/Spanglish music like those songs of Enrique Iglesias, since apart from them being nice, like "Bailamos", I get to learn some Spanish words too.

Actually, that's not exactly wrong, it's just dialect!

It's a common mistake; AAVE, or African American Vernacular English, is usually mistaken for bad grammar or the user "just not speaking English very well," even by native English speakers who were born and raised in the U.S. But it really is its own dialect, complete with its own internal and consistent rules about how to use the language. It's not really any different from hearing Southerners say "ain't" or "y'all," or someone say "make like" when they mean "act like," or put "a-" before a verb. It's definitely good to know that it's a dialect and therefore if you're trying to learn to speak what's thought of as "proper" English, you should be using different grammar, but it's not just wrong grammar.

(I'm mostly responding to you because I thought you might find it neat to know this stuff. I don't mean it as a lecture, I just find dialects really interesting!)

What motivates me is the added knowledge of learning something new, since not all people know a foreign language. So the thought of increasing my knowledge in general is what motivates me to lean a new language.

Here in the Philippines, English is widely spoken, and majority of the people in here can speak and understand English. Almost everyone can speak the language with varying levels of fluency. English media is also a huge part of our culture. Our radio stations mostly play English songs and our tv networks mostly air English programs.

My dad claims that he has roughly learned how to speak basic Visayan (a local dialect) just by listening to his officemates speak Visayan. So I guess that it's possible learn any language just by listening to other people talk. After all, you can learn and absorb new words thru constant repetition.

In Tagalog, it goes like this: "Hindi ko malubos maisip kung ano ang magiging buhay ko pag wala ka."

I do not live in the US, but I'm sure that those who do will definitely grab the opportunity to avail of this offer.

Aside from that, I think a simple thank you card would be enough to warm their heart.
