  1. I have a friend using Rosetta Stone - German and he enjoys it. The only thing he doesn't like is the price point. He said there are "group/live" lessons, where he can chat to native speakers after awhile, which he enjoys. I've used it for French (through a trial) and didn't enjoy it, but I don't know if it's because I had limited access to the program or not.

  2. I chose German as my next learning language, because I've always thought it was a beautiful language. The words sound very beautiful. I think the country is beautiful as well.  I also decided to learn it because, in high school, my drama teacher was an ex-German teacher at another school, she used to talk to us in German (which none of us really understood lol), so it made me want to learn the language.

  3. Some of mine include:

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. (Thomas Edison)

The three great essentials to achieve anything worth while are: Hard work, Stick-to-itiveness, and Common sense. (Thomas Edison)

The only difference between the saint and the sinner is that every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future. (Oscar Wilde)

Life imitates art far more than art imitates Life. (Oscar Wilde)

  4. Honestly, I studied French, because I was forced to take a foreign language in school. We only had two options and of the two, I'd rather learn French. I took two years of it then was forced into the other language anyway when the French teacher left and didn't tell anybody. :S

  5. I think Google Translate is a good option for online translations, depending on the language you are trying to translate from (if none English). I haven't tried English to another language, but with a job I used too do, I would have to translate various languages into English and fix any mistakes (after translated). I noticed that when it translated from French to English it was pretty close, but when it translated, say, Japanese or something it was very far off and I'd have to use the words that were correct (be it correct all together, or spelled correctly) to determine the rest and leave a note about it. So, I think it depends.

  6. Correct, the Island of Grimsey, is located within the Arctic Circle. I don't think I could ever live there as I like it when the sun, goes down lol. I'd love to visit though, I hear that Iceland is one of the friendliest and safest places in the world. So, my goal is to visit once in my lifetime. I used to have a program downloaded on my Android device with a bunch of different facts and photos about Iceland as a whole and the different regions.

Nice, I'll have to check them out!! =)

  7. I've always found writing harder than reading or speaking because you have to remove where the special letters are/which sign is above the letter when writing it. When speaking, you just have to pronounce the word correctly, same as with reading. I think it takes a lot more patience too learn the symbols and how to spell the words than it is too speak or read them.

  8. I rarely watch them with subtitles - most of what I watch is in English. When I am watching a foreign film, I always have subtitles on, sometimes I'll put subtitles on during the English film as well though. I have a film (that's in English) that has Swedish subtitles hard-coded into the film. I forget they are there and don't notice them after awhile, so they don't help me learn the language.

  9. I started learning French at my school in the 7th grade. I took it for 2 years (until grade 9), before the teacher decided to go to another school. I was then forced to take Spanish for 2 years (for graduation purposes) in grades 9 and 10. I took drama is grade 12, which meant I learned a bit of German as the teacher was a former German teacher at another school so spoke to us in the language sometimes.

  10. There are a couple high schools in my city that do offer it as a foreign language option, one of them being a language school (they offer dozens of languages). Unfortunately, my school only offered French and Spanish, when I went there. They now offer German (for about 2 years now) and I hear people are signing up for it more than the others. Yes, I think German should be taught in high schools. I think it gives the students more of an option. If the student can choose which language too learn (which in some schools, you have to learn a language, you don't have an option), I think they would better appreciative it and learn more/take more away from the class since they want to be there and weren't forced.

  11. Hi, caparica007! Thank you for the welcome! To be honest, it was a song that made me want to study Icelandic so much, ever since then, I've wanted to visit there. The song was called "Fimm A Richter". It's a fun, catchy, pop song. Yes, hopefully I'll be around all the boards where I know some of the language.
