Although learning a language under the age of 5 is still considered easy, the brain actually learns to distinguish the various sounds of a language within the first 6 month of its life and then it becomes much harder. For example there are no 'English' L and R sounds in Japanese, so many native Japanese speakers find it difficult to distinguish L and R sounds.
