  1. Hello,

It's great to have you around.

It would be a challenge learning Chinese Language, but the end goal is you will achieve it since that is what you have decided to do. Members here will be of help.

    Wishing you the best:)

  2. Has anyone noticed that when you watch a movie in a foreign language you do not understand and the movie is not subtitled; with focus and concentration, especially with intriguing movies, you tend to understand what's going on.

I grew up watching Indian movies and some were not subtitled but I did understand the movie. I have had similar experiences with French and Spanish movies too and eventually pick up some words that are emphasized.

Who else has been in this situation?

  3. I would rather show my achievement in language learning by communicating rather than through certification.

The only time I have sat for a language exam is IELTS and I am an English speaker but needed it for post graduate admissions in Germany. Other than that, I would rather not take language exams.

  4. That's great!

I guess when you are fluent with languages, switching would not be a big deal. Particularly when you learn these languages as a child. I do switch languages between my mother tongue when speaking to my family but when my husband comes around, I have to switch to English so that he can follow with the conversation.

It's a natural process you are unaware of.

  5. When I said 'baby language', I meant the language babies use when they just learn to speak. It comes in babbles and gibberish and no one ever seems to understand. Except scientists, who recently are developing ways of understanding how babies communicate to one another using this language.

  6. I think these languages should be recovered; it's not like there are new languages to replace them.

I always believe in preserving a culture; cuisine, dressing, ceremonies, festivals and languages so that they can go on for many generations to come.

  7. Welcome! Wishing you the best as you converse in Finnish.

It would be great if you had people you communicate in the language constantly. It would get you perfected in Finnish.

    Best Wishes :)

  8. Welcome to the forum David!

It's great you engage in long conversations. I hope you will share life's experiences with us here. Feel free to express your language learning here.

We help each other in the best ways we can.

  9. When I was in Junior High School, we were taught French and we never took it seriously while others were taught Arabic. In Senior High, most of us dropped the languages completely, so we could have time for other social activities.

Now, I see the loss of not paying so much attention at language learning.

What's your story? Did you take your language learning at school seriously?

  10. It is a modern trend that children don't always learn the native language of their parents. This is giving rise to more and more children of the new generation only being able to speak English in most countries.

Would you encourage language learning for your children to preserve and imbibe the culture for the future generation?
