  1. Hi Does anyone know of any discord servers for language learning where people actually use the voice chat rooms to speak? I have joined a few but the voicechat features are almost never used. I'm a woman who is learning French, Esperanto and just starting Mandarin. English is my native language. Thanks in advance J

And they are adding new languages constantly--next is American Sign Language. App download is free! 3. Hello Everyone! I am working on making a mobile phone application that helps people learn a new language through conversations. The application will connect students with nearby native speakers so they can meetup, chat and help people pick up the language in a more authentic environment. You can search people based on the languages you speak or are learning, and can plan your meetups through creating invitations. My team is trying to change the traditional way of how people practice a newly learnt language. A comprehensive command of language requires more than a disparate list of words in your vocabulary bank. It requires that you have the skill to discern the nuances, and the ability to use words in their right context and setting and even knowing the history and roots behind those words. We believe that only a native speaker can help someone understand these intricacies. Therefore, we aim to help learners by pairing them up with native speakers so that they are able to practice their spoken skills and become confident speakers. So I am looking for some insights as to how generally people would like to learn in this kind of scenario, and gather some feedback. Please leave a comment below if you'd like to volunteer to contribute and share your thoughts and I'll reach out to you with some follow up questions. If you have ever traveled to a different country and tried to learn their language, I'd love to talk to you! Hit me up below
  4. I am leading a new project called www.speakmates.com where we are trying to let Language Mentors and people seeking to practice speaking a language find each other, meet in a cafe in small groups and socialize while practicing a language. We would be very happy to have you in our community, get your feedbacks and any support you might want to offer. Registering, creating and listing a language meetup is completely free for now, we are financing ourselves and we are planning to keep it free as much as possible.
  5. In a vast yet diversified country like India where dialect and languages vary for every couple of hundred kilometres, English and Hindi remain among the most widely spoken, understood and recognized languages. Along these two languages, English generally connects a lot of people who hail from areas where spoken local languages are completely different from each other i.e. Tamil and Marathi. In such cases, English acts the bridge between the individuals and enables them incommunicating with each other easily. For all other practical purposes also, English is widely hailed and used as a common language across the globe. Therefore learning English language becomes pertinent for any individual who aspires to build his/her career in today’s globalized economy. English language acts as a stepping stone towards success for students of all streams as well as working professionals across all the industry verticals. Developing command over any language including English comprises of developing deep understanding of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciations. Generally English is considered as a funny language because its pronunciations and vocabulary vary alot. Often similarly spelt words have different pronunciations and alphabets remain silent in many words which make the pronunciations very peculiar and it takes consistent time and effort to remember and master them. This primarily happens because roots of large quantum of English wordsoriginate from other languages like Latin, French, Spanish etc. This trait also adds lot of diversity to the language and makes it easy for people across the globe to adapt it. 8. Hello everyone! This is a post to share some experiences. I am a masters student in Sweden, currently on my second year. I had studied Swedish for merely 3 months before my arrival here in my home country, where I covered the absolute basics. Then I had a university course for a semester, mostly revisiting what I already knew and of course learning new things also. After that, I haven't had any tutoring on the language, although I kept practicing reading, listening and writing in Swedish on a daily basis. I would say I have reached an intermediate level by now, Meaning, I understand (simple to normal) texts, simple conversations (not just the really typical small-talk lines, but a simple everyday conversation in general) and since I text some friends in Swedish sometimes, I rarely have to switch to English to express myself. If you are familiar with the european framework, I'd say I'm B1+ or something, just to give you a little understanding of my level (that is also based on several assessment tests). I almost always understand what people are saying to me but (here it comes) I just don't seem to be able to talk. It's very frustrating and it gets me down. I feel I sound like a retarded. I have Swedish friends who are happy to help, talk to me in Swedish (slowly and clearly also) but I just turn mute on or reply in English. I was wondering if you had similar experiences that you could share in this thread. I would be more than glad to read through them. Thank you very much for your time

  11. Have you ever been in this situation... You are abroad, in that nice country whose language you've been learning, so excited to finally test your newly acquired skills. You go inside the shop and proudly say "Good morning, I'd like a bottle of mineral water, please" - in a foreign language of the country in question, of course. Maybe your accent is not that great. Or maybe you are still struggling with words and mix them up a bit. Either way, the shop assistant smiles and says in perfect English: "It's all right, I speak English! Sparking or still?" And your good mood goes like "pffff" I've had many situations like that in Berlin this year, when I was desperately trying to practise a bit of my beginner's German and friendly people were invariably replying in English, even if they were happily chatting to each other in German just a second ago. What do you do in such situations? Do you give up or just go on trying?
  12. I've seen a thread about meetup in the Spanish subforum but it relates to any language really. Have you ever used meetup as a way to meet native speakers in your city and practise your languages? I've only tried it recently, and it seems to be a good starting place for meeting people that speak a particular language. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find groups for all the languages I am interested in, and I'm not brave enough to start my own. What are your experiences? Have you ever used meetup or another similar site to practise your speaking skills?
