## How to use the ASCII cat generator

The **ASCII cat generator** draws a cat out of plain text characters, such as slashes, parentheses and a `w` for the mouth, so you can copy it and paste it anywhere you can type. You build yours in four steps:

1. Pick a **pose**: sitting, loaf, sleeping, walking, lying down, stretching, waving, chonky, long cat, in a box, in a mug, in a pumpkin, at a laptop, on a wall, kitten, one line, and more (26 in all).
2. Give the cat a **face**: 23 kinds of eyes, 18 mouths, whiskers, ears, cheeks and a forehead mark such as tabby stripes.
3. Add a **hat** (19 to choose from), **company** (a kitten, two kittens or a friend), something **next to the cat** (23 things, from a ball of yarn to a Christmas tree), and a **speech bubble**.
4. Tap **Copy cat** and paste it anywhere. **Random cat** rolls a new one, and **Copy link** gives you a link that opens the same cat.

The parts combine into more than 35 billion different cats, before you even type a speech bubble. Every cat is put together from parts we drew ourselves, so they are free to use anywhere: chats, bios, code comments, README files, greeting cards.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I make an ASCII cat?**

Pick a pose, eyes, mouth, whiskers and ears in the generator, add a hat, something next to the cat or a speech bubble if you like, then tap Copy cat. Random cat makes one for you.

**How do I copy and paste an ASCII cat?**

Tap Copy cat, then paste it into your chat, post or document. In Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram and Slack, wrap it in three backticks so the lines stay aligned; the Copy for Discord button does that for you.

**Why does my ASCII cat look crooked after pasting?**

ASCII art only lines up in a fixed-width font. Put the cat inside a code block, or use a one-line cat or a dot-art cat, which keep their shape in ordinary fonts.

**Is there a one-line ASCII cat?**

Yes. Choose One line as the pose to build cats such as =^owo^=, or copy one from the list of one-line cats and cat emoticons on the page.
