# Backwards Text Generator > Reverse your text three ways: the whole text backwards, the word order reversed, or each word spelled backwards. Copy the one you need. - Page: https://linguaholic.com/tools/backwards-text-generator/ - Type: free online tool (Fancy text generators), no sign-up, runs in the browser - Publisher: Linguaholic (https://linguaholic.com/), made by Marcel Iseli - Last updated: October 2, 2026 - Open it pre-filled: https://linguaholic.com/tools/backwards-text-generator/?text=hello+world - `text`: text to restyle (up to 1,000 characters) (for example `hello world`) ## Three ways to reverse text “Reverse this” can mean reversing the letters, the words, or both. This **backwards text generator**, or reverse text generator, shows all three at once, so you can copy the one you meant. Here is the same sentence, `The quick brown fox`, run through each mode: | Mode | What it does | Result | | --- | --- | --- | | Backwards | Every character in reverse order, spaces included | xof nworb kciuq ehT | | Reversed Word Order | The words stay readable; the last word comes first | fox brown quick The | | Each Word Backwards | Each word is spelled backwards, in its original place | ehT kciuq nworb xof | The first row is what most people mean by **backwards text** or **reverse text**. The second is a word reverser: use it to **reverse words** in a sentence without scrambling them. The third reverses letters word by word, which is easier to read back than a fully reversed line. Two more rows, Mirror and Upside Down, change the shape of the letters as well. They are explained further down. ## How to use the text reverser 1. Type or paste your text in the box. Every row updates as you type. 2. Tap the row you want, or its **Copy** button. 3. Paste the reversed text wherever you need it. To turn backwards text back into normal text, paste it in and copy the Backwards row again. Reversing twice gives you the original. With several lines of text, the Backwards row reverses everything, so the last line comes out first. The two word modes work line by line and keep your line breaks where they are. ## Frequently asked questions **How do I read or decode backwards text?** Read it from the last character to the first, or paste it into the generator and copy the Backwards row. Reversing reversed text gives you the original. **Can I use backwards text as a username?** Yes. Plain backwards text uses the same letters you typed, so it is accepted wherever the original spelling would be, including @handles. The Mirror and Upside Down rows use special characters and are not accepted in handles. **How do I reverse the order of words without reversing the letters?** Use the Reversed Word Order row. It keeps every word spelled normally and puts the last word first, so "one two three" becomes "three two one". **Does it reverse numbers, punctuation, and emoji?** Numbers and punctuation are reversed like any other character, so 2026 becomes 6202. Simple emoji survive, but flags and emoji with skin tones are built from several characters and can break apart. **Is backwards text a safe way to hide a password or a secret?** No. Anyone can read reversed text in a few seconds, and reversing it again restores it. It is fine for spoilers, riddles, and games, but not for anything private. **Is it backward or backwards?** Both are correct as adverbs. American English leans toward "backward" and British English toward "backwards". As an adjective, as in "a backward glance", the form without the s is standard. **What is the difference between a palindrome and a semordnilap?** A palindrome reads the same in both directions, like "level". A semordnilap spells a different word backwards, like "stressed" and "desserts". **Is the backwards text generator free and private?** Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and the text is reversed in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded or stored. ## Related tools - [Fancy Text Generator](https://linguaholic.com/tools/fancy-text-generator/): Type once and copy your text in 55 fancy styles, from cursive and gothic to bubble letters and small caps, for Instagram, Discord, TikTok and X names and bios. - [Bold Text Generator](https://linguaholic.com/tools/bold-text-generator/): Turn your text into bold letters and numbers you can copy and paste into Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and X, in eight bold styles from sans-serif to gothic. - [Cursive Text Generator](https://linguaholic.com/tools/cursive-text-generator/): Type your text and copy it in thin or bold cursive script, plain or decorated, ready to paste into Instagram, TikTok, Discord, and bios. - [Small Text Generator](https://linguaholic.com/tools/small-text-generator/): Turn your text into small caps, tiny raised letters, or tiny lowered letters, then copy and paste it into bios, display names, and messages. - [Bubble Text Generator](https://linguaholic.com/tools/bubble-text-generator/): Turn your text into circled (bubble) and squared letters that you can copy and paste into Instagram, TikTok, Discord, and bios. - [Glitch Text Generator](https://linguaholic.com/tools/glitch-text-generator/): Make glitchy, corrupted-looking text in six styles, or set your own strength and direction, then copy and paste it into names, titles, bios and chats.
