## What is glitch text?

**Glitch text** is text made to look like the screen is failing: letters streaked, smeared and half overwritten, like a corrupted file or a video signal dropping out. A mild version looks like this: s͇͒͝i̘̍̂g͛͐ͅn͚ͥ͏ą̳̝l͉̳̾ l͕ͫ͠o͓ͩ͞s̖̋̀t̻̰͆.

The look comes from glitch art, where digital errors are used on purpose as a style: a damaged image file, a video that skips, a worn-out VHS tape. Here the “errors” are small Unicode marks attached to each letter. They are real characters, so what you get is glitch text to copy and paste, not a picture.

## How to use the glitch text generator

- **Type:** enter your text in the box, up to 1,000 characters.
- **Set the strength:** in the **Make it your own** panel, drag the **How glitchy** slider from 1 (subtle) to 20 (chaos). It starts at 6.
- **Aim the marks:** three checkboxes, **Above**, **Through** and **Below**, decide where the marks land. Untick one to keep that side of the letters clean.
- **Shuffle:** the same settings with a fresh random set of marks. Tap it until the shape looks right.
- **Copy:** tap **Copy** next to your result, or tap any of the six ready-made styles underneath.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I change the color of glitch text or animate it?**

No. Glitch text is plain characters, so it takes the color and typeface of the app you paste it into, and it does not move. Colored or animated glitch needs an image or video editor.

**Why is my glitch text cut off after I paste it?**

Many apps only draw what fits inside the message or name box, so tall stacks of marks are clipped. Lower the strength, or untick Above or Below, to keep more of the marks inside the line.

**What does the Shuffle button do?**

It keeps your strength and direction settings and picks a new random set of marks. The six ready-made styles are not affected.

**What is the most readable glitch style?**

Wavy Strikethrough and Slashed, because each letter gets a single mark and nothing leaves the line. In the custom panel, a strength of 1 to 3 or the Through box on its own gives a similarly tidy result.

**Can I use glitch text as my Discord username or gamertag?**

Not in the Discord username itself, which only allows lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods. It works in the display name and server nickname. Whether a game accepts it depends on that game's name rules.

**Will people find my video or stream if the title is glitched?**

Search may not match letters that carry marks. Glitch one decorative word and keep the words people search for in plain letters.

**Does glitch text work on iPhone and Android?**

The marks are standard Unicode characters that current iPhones and Android phones display. The height and shape of the stacks vary with the font, so check the result on the device it will be seen on.

**How long can my text be?**

The box takes up to 1,000 characters. The result is much longer than what you typed, because every mark counts as a character of its own.
