Press Generate. A card shows the traditional nicknames for the name, and the list below it adds new ideas: friendly forms, sweet and silly versions, rhymes, initials and, with a last name, the kind of nickname teammates use. 2. **For a kind of nickname,** open the *Nicknames* menu and pick one of the 24 types: for a boyfriend or girlfriend, couples, best friends, group chats, brothers and sisters, twins, kids, mom, dad, grandparents, funny, cool, boyish, unisex, sporty, gamer, coworkers, pets or cars. If you also type a name, some of the cute, cool, sporty and gamer ideas are made with it (Izzy Bear, Captain Sam). 3. **Starts with** limits the list to nicknames that begin with one letter, for when you want a *J* nickname for a guy named Jake or a *K* name to match a sibling. 4. Tap a nickname to copy it, and tap the heart to save it to your favorites. Press Generate again for a new list: nothing repeats during your visit, and the generator tells you when you have seen every idea for a setting. The traditional nicknames come from a list of 1,118 given names with 2,290 nicknames between them, from English classics (Elizabeth, William, Margaret) to Spanish, Italian, Greek, Polish, Russian and other names (Ignacio → Nacho, Giuseppe → Beppe, Aleksandr → Sasha). Accents are welcome: José and Zoë work as well as Joe and Zoe. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. ## Nicknames from your name: the kinds of ideas you get A good nickname usually comes from the name itself. These are the patterns the generator uses, from the traditional to the silly: | Kind | How it works | Examples | | --- | --- | --- | | **Traditional** | The short forms a name has always had. | William → Will, Bill, Billy, Liam, Wills | | **Friendly -y and -ie** | A short form plus -y or -ie, the classic English pet-name ending. | Sam → Sammy, Kate → Katie, Madison → Maddie | | **Sweet** | A soft word after the friendly form. | Izzy Bear, Billy Boo, Katie Bug | | **Playful endings** | Big, silly endings for friends and teammates. | Samster, Maxinator, Bellazilla | | **Alliteration** | A kind or funny word that starts with the same sound. Sound, not spelling: Phil gets an F word, Cecilia an S word. | Jolly Jack, Fearless Phil, Sunny Cecilia | | **Rhymes** | A word that rhymes with the name or its pet form. | Silly Billy, Fancy Nancy, Handy Andy, Kate the Great | | **Doubles** | The first syllable twice, or a rhyming echo. | JoJo, LuLu, Tommy Wommy | | **Initials** | The first letter, or both initials when you type a last name. | J-Train, T-Bird, Big CJ | | **Last-name nicknames** | The team and school habit of shortening a surname. | Smith → Smithy, Smitty; Thompson → Thommo | Names with no traditional nickname, such as Noah, Ava or Wyatt, still get plenty of ideas from the other patterns. If a name is itself a nickname, the card tells you which names it is short for: type Bill and you will see William, along with Will, Billy and Liam. ## Frequently asked questions **How do I get a nickname from my name?** Type your name, keep 'From a name' selected and press Generate.
