Choose what to name: **towns**, **villages and hamlets**, **cities and capitals**, **kingdoms and realms**, **mountains, lakes and forests**, or **taverns and inns**. 2. Pick one of the 15 styles, from English and medieval to Viking, elven, dwarven, Old West, sci-fi and cozy, or a Japanese, French, German or Spanish feel. *Any style* mixes them all. 3. To name a place after its founder, type a name or a word in the box (Miller, Ash, your own name). About half the results will use it: *Millerford*, *Fort Miller*, *Saint-Miller*, *The Kingdom of Millerland*. 4. Press Generate. Tap a name to copy it, and tap ♥ to keep it in your favorites while you build your map. Each style has its own word bank and its own patterns, so a Nordic town gets Nordic roots and endings, and a Spanish one gets saints, rivers and adjectives that agree with their nouns. Altogether the 15 styles draw on 1,548 hand-picked words and name parts. Every press brings a new list, and a name never comes back twice during a visit. Names that belong to well-known books, films and games are filtered out, so what you get is free to use for a novel, a tabletop campaign, a video game or a school project. ## Fantasy town names by style Here are ten **fantasy town names** for each style, made by the generator above. Add the ending that describes it, like -ford, -hurst, -port or -ley, to a tree, an animal or a color. The generator does this in 15 styles, and you can type a founder's name to build names around it. **What do town name endings like -by, -thorpe and -ford mean?** -by is Old Norse for a farmstead or village, -thorpe an outlying farm, -ford a river crossing, and -chester a Roman fort or walled town. The page has tables of English, Welsh, Scottish, German, French, Spanish and Japanese place-name parts with real examples. **What is a good name for a fantasy town?** It depends on the people who live there. Kettlewick sounds like an English market town, Hvitfjord like a Viking harbor and Deepdelve like a dwarven hold. Pick a style in the generator to keep a whole region consistent. **Can I name a town after a person?** Yes. Type the founder's name or any word in the box and about half the results will use it, for example Millerford, Fort Miller, Saint-Miller or the Kingdom of Millerland. **Can it make Japanese, French, German or Spanish town names?** Yes. These styles use real place-name parts, such as -yama (mountain) and -kawa (river) in Japanese, -sur-Mer in French, -burg and -dorf in German, and San, Santa and Villanueva-style names in Spanish. **What is the longest town name in the world?** The longest town name in Europe belongs to a village in Wales with 58 letters, usually shortened to Llanfairpwll. The longest place name of all is the 85-letter Maori name of a hill in New Zealand. **What are some funny town names in America?** Real examples include Boring (Oregon), Why (Arizona), Truth or Consequences (New Mexico), Peculiar (Missouri) and Two Egg (Florida). The page lists more, with where they are and how some got their names. **Can it name kingdoms, taverns and landmarks too?** Yes. Choose Kingdoms & realms, Mountains, lakes & forests, or Taverns & inns. Some styles have their own inns, such as French auberges, German Gasthaus names and Japanese ryokan. **Is it free to use the names?** Yes. The generator is free with no sign-up, and the names are yours to use for stories, games, events and anything else. Everything runs in your browser. Names from well-known books, films and games are filtered out. ## Related tools - [Fantasy Name Generator](https://linguaholic.com/tools/fantasy-name-generator/): Fantasy names for 20 peoples and roles in five styles, with first names, last names, clans and epithets, plus names for kingdoms, worlds and guilds. - [D&D Name Generator](https://linguaholic.com/tools/dnd-name-generator/): Generate D&D character names for ten races, with surnames, clan names, or titles, plus party names and tavern names for your campaign. - [Last Name Generator](https://linguaholic.com/tools/last-name-generator/): Generate random last names by origin, from common American and Japanese surnames to fantasy, noble, and medieval ones, alone or paired with a first name. - [Dragon Name Generator](https://linguaholic.com/tools/dragon-name-generator/): Generate dragon names by element, gender and age, with epic titles, last names and real-word meanings, plus three-headed dragons, cute dragons and bearded dragon names. - [Elf Name Generator](https://linguaholic.com/tools/elf-name-generator/): Generate elf names by type — high elf, wood elf, dark elf, half-elf, snow elf, or Christmas elf — with female and male first names and matching elf last names. - [Character Name Generator](https://linguaholic.com/tools/character-name-generator/): Generate first and last names for the characters in your story.
