Frankly speaking it is very important to stay motivated, learning any foreign language. The same we can say about Russian. Recent analytical data showed that over 10 million foreigners learn Russian. What are the reasons? Actually in this post we will try to find out the truth.

1. Russian is difficult, but rich and “soft” language (at least compared to German). A good amount of the world's classic literature, poems and novels are written in Russian. For example: Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky , Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy , The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin , Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol  and so on.

Surely, it is interesting to read such books in Russian language and escape possible mistakes, which can be made during translation.

By the way, the Russian language is on the 5th place in a list of most widely spoken languages.

2. Also, it is not a secret that Russian people are spread all over the world.  Very often marriages happen, where one person is from Russia. So it does not matter, want you or not, but you have to know native language of your husband or wife. Sooner or later you will need to communicate with family in law. Usually in such families children are bilingual and learn both languages. So if you are not married, start learning Russian. You never know where you are!

3. Russia is the biggest country in the world. If you do not believe me just look at the map. This country had a great impact on the world’s history. Besides, there are many sightseeing places here in Russia. Moscow, Saint Petersburg – are beautiful places to visit and see everything by own eyes. Yes, Moscow is worth visiting. And surely, you will need basic lexis. Actually, if you read my posts, so I have already posted list of useful words and phrases.  So Russia is not only frosty winter, bears and balalajka. For example, Moscow is a city, which never sleeps. Its traffic is enormous!

4. Often Russia becomes a guest country for economic forums, business seminars or trainings, sports competition… The 2014 Winter Olympic Games take place in Russia.

It would be very interesting to hear what are the motivations of those who come to this forum to keep learning foreign languages.

Would anyone like to share his/her thoughts? Ideas?

Did you know that all astronauts are required to learn Russian? Otherwise they would not understand their Russian colleagues in space. Did you see that hilarious episode in the Big Bang Theory where one of the characters goes to the ISS and has to stay there for months?

Even in the recent "Gravity" movie Sandra Bullock was stuck in the Russian Space Station where all manuals were written in Russian.

So, if you plan to become an astronaut, learning Russian may really help! :)

Best of luck in your future endeavours, fellow linguaholics!
