Do you think there is a bad/stupid reason to learn a language?

Learning a language is great, no matter if the reason behind it is a good one, a useful one, or just plain stupid, like understanding porn. Of course, there might be some cases where some people would opt for picking up some language for reasons like you mentioned above. The thing is that they are at least learning a language, whereas there are so many people around that do not even pick a language even if they have a good reason, like earning some money thus making their ends meet, or learning about the culture, or just picking up a language of the country you next plan to visit.

Yes, i agree with your comment but one thing i had to tell you, if you are going to learn different languages for understanding pornography. It might be offensive and stupidity for me.

It is a pretty.. unusual reason, but hey, if it gets them interested in the language, then that's a good thing. I think any interest in a language (for whatever reason) is better than no interest. If they have no interest, they're just wasting everyone's time.

I don't think there is a bad reason for wanting to learn a language. Unless, of course, it would somehow hurt someone else, but I can't really imagine how that would work! I would agree, though, that any student "forced" to learn a language (by the school system or whatever) isn't going to benefit in the same way someone who truly enjoys the language would.

Learning a language opens you up to a new culture and widens your opportunities for interpersonal connection. Any reason that would lead one to something so beneficial is a great reason, in my opinion!

Yup, but rarely someone interested to learn something for good. Thank you!

Really? I don't think so. A lot of people have interest in language, but because other people are messing around, they can't enroll in the classes. I really think that's a shame.

Reason not, but way.

Once I had a student who sit down with the english dictionary and started to learn the words from A until Z. She lost all her motivation in a short time, can't blame her at all. Dictionary is not a language book!

That's one crazy way of doing it @hungary93, but I've heard of people doing it with some degree of success. I personally don't see how learning words in isolation would work. It definitely wouldn't work for me at all, but if it works for someone else, why not? It really is true that we all have our own little quirks and preferred methods of learning new languages!

Yup, I also have some nasty interest to learn something. It doesn't matter just learn things to do more. However the way is something else that peoples like or don't.

I feel like there can be a few bad reasons to start studying, and chances are if you don't end up finding a good reason for you to keep studying, you won't actually end up learning much. However, that being sad, having a bad reason is better than no reason at all, and if that is enough just to make you start learning -- that is great! If you really get into it, you will naturally find better reasons to keep studying, and that bad reason probably won't matter much anymore.

I think the worst reason to learn a language is for the sake of bragging, or to look down upon others.
