Phrasal Verbs: CALL

Today we're going to look at phrasal verbs with the word 'call'. Read these definitions and examples, and then try to complete the activity below.

Call someone back: Return a phone call to someone who tried to phone you.

Example: “Matthew phoned and asked me on a date, but I don’t want to go so I won’t call him back.”

Call something off: Cancel

Example: “Only one person chose the course, so the professor had to call it off.”

Call on someone (1): To ask for an answer or response

“I was sitting in front of her and when she finished talking she called on me to continue the lecture.”

Call on someone (2): to visit someone (usually in their home)

Example: “Hi Margaret, we called on you last night but you weren’t home.”

Call someone up: to phone someone

Example: “I can’t wait to call her up and tell her that I’m going to visit her in July!”
