Favorite French Quotes?

Recommended Posts

I was inspired by the monstrous and very entertaining and educational English quotes thread.  Does anyone have any favorite French quotes?

Mine is probably: "Il est difficle de vaincre ses passions, et impossible de les satisfaire." -De La Sabliére

"Si jeunesse savait, si vieillesse pouvait." I think of this quote every time I think about all the classes I could have taken, all the A's I could have gotten, and all I could have accomplished when I was younger if I knew what I know today. So basically, I'm thinking about this quote all the time.  ;D

I also like this quote: "Il n'y a qu' un bonheur dans la vie, c'est d'aimer et d'être aimé." -Georges Sand.

My favorite French quote would be:

La vérité vaut bien qu'on passe quelques années sans la trouver.

Translation:

Truth is more valuable if it takes you a few years to find it. -Renard

I love the way it sounds when I say it but also love what the quote stands for!

My favorite quote is from a children's book actually. Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry. I think I've mentioned several times that it's my favorite children's book. Anyway, I just love the lessons I got from that book. Especially this one:

Voici mon secret. Il est très simple: on ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.

I want to get this thread moving again. We need some extra life in the french quarter. :) So, here's a couple more quotes that I like...

"Vivre sans aimer n’est pas proprement vivre." --Molière

"C’est cela l’amour, tout donner, tout sacrifier sans espoir de retour." --Albert Camus

great quotes. I like the one from Albert Camus! When I was still in school, we had to read some of his books! I really enjoyed reading his works.

My favorite will always be the quote I learned from a textbook and explained by our teacher - "C'est en forgeant qu'on devient forgeron." (It's in forging we become forger). It is a very inspiring quote, whenever I think of it, I feel like I can achieve a lot of things. I think it is similar to the popular English quote -"Practice makes perfect."
