Johann Posted October 26, 2016 Report Posted October 26, 2016 Hello there! I have a question about Mandarin Chinese grammar. Which of the following sentences are acceptable: 1) 他是在公共汽车里的前面 2) 他是在公共汽车的前面里 3) 他是在公共汽车里的前面里 Also, would you be able to say something like "他是在前面的公共汽车(里)? Thanks in advance! Quote
linguaholic Posted October 26, 2016 Report Posted October 26, 2016 I wouldn't use any of these three sentences, to be honest. Could you provide a translation of what you would like to get across for those three sentences. I might be able to provide some solutions then. Quote
Johann Posted October 26, 2016 Author Report Posted October 26, 2016 I'm trying to say "he is in the front of the bus". The thing is that I'm a syntactitian doing research, so I'd like to know if these sentences are acceptable grammatically, regardless of how commonly it's used. Thanks! Quote
宇崎ちゃん Posted October 26, 2016 Report Posted October 26, 2016 Since this is a Chinese-specific question and grammar related, I've moved it to a more appropriate section. Quote

Thanks! then I would just say 他在公共汽车前面。 the 里 is definitely wrong semantically here, also syntactically I would say as it doesn't make any sense to have a preposition at this place in the sentence.
