Find Native Speakers to Practice Speaking Skills

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone!

I am working on making a mobile phone application that helps people learn a new language through conversations. The application will connect students with nearby native speakers so they can meetup, chat and help people pick up the language in a more authentic environment. You can search people based on the languages you speak or are learning, and can plan your meetups through creating invitations.

My team is trying to change the traditional way of how people practice a newly learnt language. A comprehensive command of language requires more than a disparate list of words in your vocabulary bank. It requires that you have the skill to discern the nuances, and the ability to use words in their right context and setting and even knowing the history and roots behind those words. We believe that only a native speaker can help someone understand these intricacies. Therefore, we aim to help learners by pairing them up with native speakers so that they are able to practice their spoken skills and become confident speakers.

So I am looking for some insights as to how generally people would like to learn in this kind of scenario, and gather some feedback.

Please leave a comment below if you'd like to volunteer to contribute and share your thoughts and I'll reach out to you with some follow up questions. If you have ever traveled to a different country and tried to learn their language, I'd love to talk to you!

Hi tangerine

Sounds great! Im very interested in experimenting with new methods of how we learn languages. I would be happy to get inspired by your idea and, perhaps, to inspire you with my experience. Let's have a conversation!

Talking about my experience in learning new languages: I'm a German native speaker, speaking Spanish with a high fluency (I've lived for one year in Chile). Furthermore I speak French, pretty fluent I'd say....

I hope to hear from you soon! :)

Could you help me, how can I improve my speaking task:

From my point of view, the Polish education system has many failings, but the main failing is an attitude of many teachers in Polish schools. Firstly, the relation between student and teacher is too weak. It means that the teacher should discuss more with students. Moreover, the teacher ought to teach more individually. For example, if some students have many problems with speaking, the teacher should help him by giving advice, how to improve his speaking. I mean that the teacher should not only point out mistakes but also the teacher ought to help how to resolve the problem. In this case, the problem of students’ speaking. In other words, the teacher should be an instructor, who gives the student a helping hand.
A few years ago I heard in some English Podcast that ‘teaching is not just testing”. I totally agree with this statement. The most important value of teaching should be helping how to improve students’ abilities. That is why, I think, that the teachers and lecturers should reduce the number of tests during the school or the academic year.
Let’s move on to another disadvantage of the Polish education system. Personally speaking, I think that a core curriculum is inappropriate. In Polish middle schools, secondary schools and universities there are many unnecessary subjects, which are time-consuming, for instance: chemistry, Information Technology or biology.  If some students are not keen on this subjects, and they are sure that these subjects are not their cup of tea, they should learn at the same time their preferred subjects such us English or Mathematics  to polish up their abilities. If a student is not a biology fan, he should not waste their time in a subject which is not prospective for him or her.
The best solution to solve this problem is a new curriculum. The student is aware which subjects can be useful for him in the future, and which subjects are completely unnecessary for him or her.
To sum up, if we want to improve the Polish education system, Polish teachers should be more patient and should work with students more individually instead of working in groups. I do not want to criticize working in groups, but in my opinion, working in groups is less effective than individual work. What is more, teachers should reduce the number of tests because the tests take too much time. As I meant, the core curriculum should be also changed because there are too many unnecessary subjects.

      Vocabulary Expansion
Did you know that in English we don’t eat coffee? We drink coffee. We have coffee. We imbibe coffee. We sip coffee. But we don’t eat it. Eating involves mastication, involves chewing.

What about ice cream? We don’t eat ice cream, either. We don’t chew it. However, we don’t simply swallow ice cream, either, as if it were a liquid! We have ice cream. We don’t eat ice cream. We don’t imbibe ice cream. We don’t sip ice cream. We just have ice cream. That’s it!

When speaking of consuming any solid food, semi-solid food, soft food or liquid, the safest, and always correct, verb to use is “to have”.

Recently, I had eggs cooked in butter with sliced tomatoes and hot peppers. I also had milk with two tablespoons of Nescafe Clasico stirred in. What did you have recently for one of your meals?

      Gems from Class
      interested vs interesting
Both interested and interesting are adjectives.
interested says something about how the subject feels
For example: I am interested in travel.
In this sentence, “I” is the subject. This sentence talks about how “I” feel.

interesting says something about the power of  the subject to make other people feel a certain way.
      For example: Travel is interesting.
In this sentence, “Travel” is the subject. This sentence talks about the fact that “travel” has the power of making people feel a certain way.

For more practice and to subconsciously learn the rules, do some online exercises. Here is a  link. Repeat the exercise many times until you get 100% correct repeatedly.

      Pronunciation & Intonation
met SOUNDS LIKE set, bet debt, jet, let, net, pet
met is the simple past affirmative form of the verb “to meet”

meet SOUNDS LIKE meat, seat, neat, feet, feat, Crete
meet is one of the simple present affirmative forms of the verb “to meet”
the other  simple present affirmative form of the verb “to meet” is meets

Tip: When reading and writing, use your voice! When you use your voice, you’ll be less likely to write “met” when you mean “meet”. You’ll be less likely to  write one word, when you really mean another one.
