Yep, all the time. My husband is from Peru so I will just sit and watch a show with him. Most of the time, I will understand the show too.

It took awhile to learn but eventually I learned what his family is saying to me. Mostly with TV, talking to friends, and also talking with the hubby.

My first word was "No" as I was a total rebel. Well, at least that is what my mom told me. As I got older, I was a little better. You know how it is when a kid is in their "terrible twos" where they run around not listening to their parents.

Starting with a new language, it's not too important for me unless I am in school. Learning from home is another story for me. With my own language being English, grammar is very important for me. Drives me crazy when I see people typing with all caps or horrible grammar in general.

I think Chinese is the most difficult to learn. I tried learning on my MindSnacks app but I just couldn't get past level 10 because it is totally different from learning languages such as Spanish, Italian, and German.

I started to learn a second language when I began hanging around friends who spoke mostly Spanish in my high school. This was a good start for me, even though I ended up failing Spanish class.

To be honest with you, Google Translator is either a hit or miss. I would double check the phrase online after using the translator. Also, another good idea would be to have your own Spanish journal. This way you can write down your commonly used phrases and remember these. It worked for me. 

If I were you, I would start off with flashcards or some kind of language game. Kids aren't just going to sit down and go by the "book" because with them, they just can't sit in one place. Dedicate at least fifteen minutes each day for your child to learn a language. As they get older, you can extend their learning time.

After, it is a good idea to enroll them in either Spanish, German, or whatever language you want them to learn. Classes will be good for them and can really help.

Probably one of the most embarrassing language situation was when I assumed the word "Foto" was also used in Spanish for "Photo" but many of my in laws would pronounce it PO-TOW which basically means poo in Spanish. I ended up asking a lady if I could see her photo and pronounced it PO-TOW. She gave me a dirty look and hurried off. LOL

I've been using MindSnacks for quite some time (a nifty language app) and it has really helped me remember some of the Spanish words I have learned in the past. I love it because I don't have to learn with books. Besides, studying books isn't very fun.
