Privacy Policy

The short version
- Our free tools run in your browser. Text you type and images you convert with Linguaholic Tools are processed on your device. We don't upload or store them.
- We show ads to keep everything free. Ads are managed by Mediavine. Where the law requires it, personalized ads only run after you consent, and you can change your choice at any time.
- We measure how the site is used with Google Analytics and a few anonymous counters of our own (no cookies, no personal data).
- We never sell your email address. If you subscribe to our newsletter, we use your email only to send it, and you can unsubscribe with one click.
- You have rights over your data — see Your rights or simply contact us.
1. Who we are
This Privacy Policy explains how Linguaholic (“we”, “us”, “our”) handles personal data when you visit linguaholic.com, including our homepage, the Linguablog and Linguaholic Tools (together, the “Website”).
The Website is operated by Iseli International Commerce, which is the controller responsible for your personal data. You can reach us at feedback [at] linguaholic [dot] com or by post at Lischenweg 17, 2503 Biel, Switzerland.
2. What we collect and why
2.1 When you visit the Website (server and security logs)
Like every website, our servers and our content delivery and security provider, Cloudflare, automatically process technical data when you load a page: your IP address, the date and time of the request, the page requested, the referring page, and your browser and operating system (user agent). We use this to deliver the Website, keep it secure (for example, to block attacks and abuse) and fix errors. Server logs are deleted automatically after about 30 days.
We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy-focused, cookie-free measurement of page loads and site performance that does not track you across websites.
2.2 Analytics (Google Analytics 4)
On the Linguablog and Linguaholic Tools we use Google Analytics 4, provided by Google, to understand how visitors use the Website — for example, which pages are popular and how people find us. Google Analytics uses cookies (such as _ga) and collects information such as pages visited, time on page, device and browser type, approximate location (derived from your IP address) and referral source. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store full IP addresses. You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting data by blocking or deleting cookies in your browser, by using the choices offered in our consent tool where it is shown, or with Google’s opt-out browser add-on. 2.3 Our own anonymous measurements
To improve the Website, we count how often certain elements are shown and clicked — for example, which version of our newsletter banner or our “Before you go…” reading suggestions works best. These counts are anonymous totals only (such as “version B was shown 120 times and clicked 4 times”). They are stored on our own server, set no cookies, store nothing on your device, and do not record your IP address or any identifier.
2.4 Linguaholic Tools
Our tools (word counters, translators, text generators, image-to-ASCII and more) process everything locally in your browser. The text you enter and the images you convert are not sent to our servers or stored by us. Some tools offer a copy or download button; the file is created on your device.
2.5 Newsletter
If you sign up for our newsletter, we collect your email address and, if you provide it, your first name. We use this only to send you the newsletter and closely related updates, and to understand which emails are read and clicked. Our sign-up forms are provided by Kit (formerly ConvertKit) and by Grow (a Mediavine service; see 2.6), and the newsletter is sent through Kit. Every email contains an unsubscribe link, and you can unsubscribe at any time. Some sign-up forms provided by Grow ask separately whether you agree to your email address being used, in hashed (scrambled) form, for interest-based advertising; this is optional and not required to receive the newsletter.
2.6 Grow by Mediavine
The Linguablog uses Grow, provided by Mediavine, for features such as saving favorite posts, content recommendations, subscribe forms and social sharing. If you use these features, Grow processes the data needed to provide them (for example, your email address if you create a Grow account or subscribe, and your saved posts). Grow may set cookies or use local storage. See the Grow privacy policy.
2.7 Comments and contacting us
If you leave a comment on a blog post (where comments are open), we store the name, email address and website you enter, your comment, and your IP address and browser user agent to help detect spam. Your email address is never published. If you contact us by email or through the contact form, we receive your name, email address, optional subject and message, and use them only to reply and to handle your request. Messages sent through the form are delivered to us through Discord (posted to a private channel that only our team can see) or, as a backup, by email, and are not stored on the website. To prevent spam, the form keeps a pseudonymized (hashed) version of your IP address for one hour to limit how many messages can be sent; it is then deleted automatically.
2.8 Embedded content and fonts
Some pages include content from other services, such as our Discord community widget or embedded videos. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you visited the other website: that provider receives your IP address and may use cookies and track your interaction with the embedded content, according to its own privacy policy (for example, Discord or Google/YouTube). Our homepage and blog also load fonts from Google Fonts, which means your browser connects to Google’s servers and Google receives your IP address.
2.9 Social sharing
Our share buttons are simple links. No data is sent to a social network until you click a button and choose to share, at which point that network’s own privacy policy applies. To show how often a page has been shared, our own server counts each use of a share button: the page and the button (for example “WhatsApp”), nothing about you and nothing about what you shared.
2.10 Our tools on other websites
Other websites may show some of our tools in a frame (see Put our tools on your website). An embedded tool is loaded from our server like any page (section 2.1), but it shows no ads, runs no analytics, sets no cookies and loads nothing from other companies; what you type stays in your browser. To know where our tools are used, it counts how often it is loaded on each website: the tool’s name and the website’s name (for example “example.com”), nothing about you. The website that embeds the tool is responsible for its own page and its own privacy practices.
3. Advertising (Mediavine)
Ads help us keep Linguaholic and all of our tools free. Where the law requires it (for example, in the EU, the UK and Switzerland), a consent tool asks for your choices before personalized advertising or analytics are used, and you can change them at any time. In the United States, our consent tool offers a way to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for targeted advertising (see section 10).
Mediavine Programmatic Advertising (Ver 1.1)
The Website works with Mediavine to manage third-party interest-based advertising appearing on the Website. Mediavine serves content and advertisements when you visit the Website, which may use first and third-party cookies. A cookie is a small text file which is sent to your computer or mobile device (referred to in this policy as a “device”) by the web server so that a website can remember some information about your browsing activity on the Website.
First party cookies are created by the website that you are visiting. A third-party cookie is frequently used in behavioral advertising and analytics and is created by a domain other than the website you are visiting. Third-party cookies, tags, pixels, beacons and other similar technologies (collectively, “Tags”) may be placed on the Website to monitor interaction with advertising content and to target and optimize advertising. Each internet browser has functionality so that you can block both first and third-party cookies and clear your browser’s cache. The "help" feature of the menu bar on most browsers will tell you how to stop accepting new cookies, how to receive notification of new cookies, how to disable existing cookies and how to clear your browser’s cache. Without cookies you may not be able to take full advantage of the Website content and features. Please note that rejecting cookies does not mean that you will no longer see ads when you visit our Site. In the event you opt-out, you will still see non-personalized advertisements on the Website.
The Website collects the following data using a cookie when serving personalized ads:
- IP Address
- Operating System type
- Operating System version
- Device Type
- Language of the website
- Web browser type
- Email (in hashed form)
Mediavine Partners (companies listed below with whom Mediavine shares data) may also use this data to link to other end user information the partner has independently collected to deliver targeted advertisements. Mediavine Partners may also separately collect data about end users from other sources, such as advertising IDs or pixels, and link that data to data collected from Mediavine publishers in order to provide interest-based advertising across your online experience, including devices, browsers and apps. This data includes usage data, cookie information, device information, information about interactions between users and advertisements and websites, geolocation data, traffic data, and information about a visitor’s referral source to a particular website. Mediavine Partners may also create unique IDs to create audience segments, which are used to provide targeted advertising.

5. Legal bases (EU, UK, Switzerland)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we process your personal data on the following legal bases (Article 6 GDPR / UK GDPR, and the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection):
- Consent — personalized advertising, analytics cookies where consent is required, and newsletter sign-up. You can withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing that happened before.
- Legitimate interests — operating, securing and improving the Website (server logs, Cloudflare, our anonymous counters), showing non-personalized ads, and answering your messages.
- Performance of a contract — sending you the newsletter you asked for.
- Legal obligation — where we must keep or disclose data by law.
7. International transfers
Some of our providers (including Google, Mediavine, Kit, Cloudflare and Discord) are based in or process data in the United States and other countries whose data protection laws may differ from yours. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework (and its UK and Swiss extensions) or the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.
8. How long we keep data
- Server logs: about 30 days.
- Anonymous counters (including the count of embedded tools per website): kept as long as useful; they contain no personal data.
- Google Analytics: up to 14 months.
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe; we then delete or anonymize your data within a reasonable period.
- Comments: as long as the comment is published.
- Messages to us: as long as needed to handle your request. The contact form’s hashed anti-spam record is deleted after one hour.
- Advertising cookies: according to each partner’s settings; see Mediavine Partners.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you;
- correct inaccurate data;
- delete your data;
- restrict or object to certain processing, including processing based on legitimate interests and direct marketing;
- data portability — receive your data in a common format;
- withdraw consent at any time; and
- lodge a complaint with a data protection authority — for example, in Switzerland the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC), or the supervisory authority in your EU country or the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
To exercise your rights, contact us. We will respond within the time required by law (usually within one month). Please note that much of the data used for analytics and advertising is linked to cookie or device identifiers rather than to your name, and is controlled by our partners; the easiest way to manage it is through our consent tool and the opt-out links in section 3.
10. Additional rights for US residents
Residents of California and other US states with comprehensive privacy laws (such as Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas and Oregon) have additional rights:
- Right to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose. In the last 12 months, we have collected: identifiers (such as IP address, cookie and device IDs, and email address if you subscribe), internet or network activity (pages viewed and interactions with ads), approximate geolocation, and inferences used for advertising. Sources and purposes are described in this policy.
- Right to delete and right to correct personal information.
- Right to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information and of targeted advertising. We do not sell personal information for money, but allowing advertising partners to collect data through cookies for interest-based advertising may count as a “sale” or “sharing” under some state laws. You can opt out using the “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” option in our consent tool, by using the industry opt-out links in section 3, or by enabling Global Privacy Control (GPC) in your browser where it is supported.
- Right to non-discrimination — we will not treat you differently for exercising your rights.
We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal information. To make a request, contact us; we may need to verify your request. You may use an authorized agent. If we deny your request, you may appeal by replying to our response.
11. Children
The Website is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
12. Security
We use HTTPS encryption, a web application firewall and other reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your data and review our measures regularly.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when our services or the law change. The “last updated” date at the top shows when it was last revised. If changes are significant, we will make that clear on the Website.
