I'm learning French currently and I'm actually far better at writing than at speaking or reading. Writing is very fun because I write in the English language and I love to extend it to what I'm learning. I agree that it can be difficult but that doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable!

I started learning English when I was three years old. I have to say, even though I've been speaking English for nearly all my life, I still sometimes make mistakes! Darn, if only I could have started right when I was born.

I'm currently trying to learn French right now, I can offer English/Mandarin Chinese services in return. I'm semi-fluent in French right now but I still think I need work on conversational grammar. Let me know!

I personally believe that music isn't as effective in language learning. The pronunciation tends to be a lot different. Take English music for instance, some syllables are stretched out for far to long or the words are obscured. In Chinese music we can't hear the different intonations.

I don't know, that's just me. I prefer to watch film in the other language to learn.

I'm more a fan of the eloquent/graceful insult than the non-explicit one. For example: "Why are you complimenting him? Have we run out of human beings?" is a favourite that I use all the time. It makes your victim wonder what exactly to say, since they never saw that coming!

In my opinion, English is easy to understand the basics. But once you go past that, it becomes extremely difficult to learn as there are little grammar rules scattered all over the place that you just won't know. Even I as a native speaker have some difficulty with grammar rules while I'm writing just because of the abundance of rules the language has.

As somebody who is used to speaking in English and learning French, I find the words in Spanish to be quite difficult to spell. I have a tough time figuring out where to pluralize my words, which letters should be double, etcetera. In my opinion, the grammar isn't actually that hard to learn! It's just the vocabulary that is difficult to master, as it is for most other languages in my opinion.

Reading this thread has really given me motivation to continue learning Spanish! It's a hard language to learn, but once you realize how important it is, you get this huge boost in adrenaline.  :amazed: My reasons are the same as many that have already been said. It's widely used in the Americas, and it's especially worthwhile for me to learn it since I'm planing to move there soon.

I remember being so fascinated by Newspeak when I read George Orwell's 1984. There was a whole appendix on the language and it absorbed me right in. Part of its appeal is that it seems very realistic and plausible. I can see it being an actual language; I understand its purpose in society. To this day it's one of my favorite books, partly due to its very believable new language!

I'm currently trying to learn Spanish and French. For Spanish, I'm actually still rather new so I'm here to look for a buddy or two for mutual encouragement in our journey.

I'm also trying to learn French. I'm pretty far into the language but I've still got a lot to learn.

A lot of it is communication, and a lot of it is culture. I'm currently learning Spanish because it's a very popular language, especially down in the States where I plan on moving in the future. It would definitely help to be able to communicate!

I think learning a new language gives you a brand new perspective of the world around you. It gives you the right tools for empathy. The next language on the list is Japanese, which I plan on learning sometime in my life. I've always been interested in Japanese things like anime... And translations are just not the same, you know?

I'm a huge stickler to grammar as a writer, so I tend not to use shortcuts or alternate spellings. It helps that my iPhone has an autocorrect feature as well as shortcuts for periods.
