I was able to study Nihonggo/Japanese when I was in college because it was our subject for our Foreign Language class. It was totally a fun experience. Aside from enrolling in a program, you may also try watching anime shows and reading manga to be able to get exposed to their language and culture.
Ah, so you actually got to study it in college? I'm sort of jealous. Sorry for the barrage of questions, but what do you think made the experience fun for you and not simply another batch of work to complete? How far did you end up going in your studies?

Hello language learners and aspiring polyglots! It's a pleasure to be a new member here. I've been interested in learning a second language, English being my mother tongue, for a while now. I think with such a supportive community at my back, I'll finally be able to push through that infamous initial motivation barrier. I'm thinking Spanish or Japanese, perhaps.
If you've got any advice for me, I'd love to hear it. I look forward to meeting the lot of you!

I'd love a Japanese track on Duolingo! I spent some brief time with Duolingo's Spanish track, and I have to say the app is very well made. The item/heart system seemed a bit pointless, but it did add some charm and flair to the experience. I'm far more interested in Japanese than I am in Spanish, so if they released a Japanese track I'd head there in a heartbeat.

A few months ago, I gave WaniKani, a Japanese Kanji learning tool, a try - and progressed through the first few levels of study. It's similar to Heisig's "Remembering the Kanji" in the way it uses mnemonics to aid with kanji recognition and recall. Each day, you get lessons and reviews to complete, and the reviews change depending on your performance. I liked it quite a bit myself, though I had to stop when my trial ran out; I wasn't ready to put money into an online learning tool just yet.
I'm curious, though: have any of you given WaniKani a try? If so, what are your thoughts on it? Is it viable for learning the core kanji effectively?

My love for Japanese music is one of the main things that spark my interest in learning the language! A song sung in Japanese adds another little layer of personality to the music. Half my bookmarked songs are in Japanese - helps with the immersion factor, I'd say, but that's hardly my intent. I just can't get enough...and it is motivating, for sure.
