Azazel Posted March 19, 2020 Report Share Posted March 19, 2020 Something I noticed while listening on youtube to Pelléas and Mélisande by Claude Debussy, is that the singers always pronounce the endings (peuv-ENT, aim-ENT). This opera was composed 100 years ago. Was french so different then? It seems implausible to mispronounce so many words for purely musical reasons. Saint-Jean Posted October 15, 2021 Report Share Posted October 15, 2021 The silent e (e caduc) is pronounced in traditional poetry and song, as it was once pronounced in speech. In the case of peuvent and aiment, the vowel isn't nasal, despite an n being written, so aime and aiment should be pronounced the same.
