Linguistics and Applied Linguistics

Hello everyone. This is Ahmed79 and this is my very first post.

I have been wondering the past few days about applied linguistics and whether it would be beneficial to study linguistics a bit first or if I could dip right in. I have read that it is now pretty much a separate discipline but I would like to make sure.

If it has not been done already, can we have a sub-forum dedicated for one or the two disciplines?
