czarina84
I am studying Spanish. I keep hearing about Catalan. What is Catalan? Is it a subdivision of Spanish? Are there others like this?
anna3101
Catalan is the language spoken alongside Spanish in Catalonia (a region in Spain). When I was there many years ago, I saw a lot of street signs in Catalonian and I remember that it looked pretty similar to Spanish and French. As far as I know, there's also a part of Spain where they speak Galician, and then of course the Basque (wouldn't know about it if it were not for the separatist movement). czarina84

Is it a different language, but some people also speak it? Like in Canada, where people speak both French and English?
anna3101
Yes, exactly. It's like in Canada or in Belgium. The official language of Spain is Spanish but in Catalonia region it's Spanish and Catalonian - both have the same official status. czarina84
czarina84
Thank you. That is very helpful. I got confused. I just thought they spoke Spanish in Spain. I had no idea about Catalan before.
