Hello there,  I'm learning German,  please see the attachment.   I don't understand why the sentences have to end in 'ihn' or 'sie' et cetera.   Please could someone explain. I would just use 'it'  normally   which in German is 'es'

kind regards   gin

1st: Every noun in German is assigned to one of 3 genders. You have to learn it for every noun. But remember: The gender differences are only relevant in the singular.

Der Stuhl (masculine) ist schön -> (and with personal pronoun) Er ist schön.

Die Lampe (feminine) ist kaputt -> Sie ist kaputt.

Das Bett (neuter) ist alt ... -> Es ist alt ...

Die Töpfe (plural) sind ... -> Sie sind ...

When you want to buy something, the question is: What would you like to buy? Or in German: Wen oder Was möchtest du kaufen? You have a direct object (use accusative).

Therefore: er -> ihn, sie -> sie, es -> es, sie (plural) -> sie (easy, isn't it?)

Der Stuhl ist schön. Ich kaufe ihn.

Die Lampe ist kaputt. Ich kaufe sie nicht.

Das Bett ist alt, aber gut. Ich möchte es kaufen.

Die Töpfe sind nicht mehr gut. Ich kaufe sie nicht.
