Commas before the word "and"...

I was taught not to use a comma before words such as "and". Nowadays I see that more people choose to use a comma there when they think that the meaning of the sentence will become clearer if they do that. Personally, I never use it and construct my sentences so that there's less of a chance of being misunderstood.
