The Pimsleur method somewhat matches what you're describing, though it only takes you to a basic level (enough for basic communication on vacation or some such).

I'm learning on my own but I wish I had a tutor. I would like to be able to try and speak more with someone. The problem is that I live a fair distance outside the urban area. So, it wouldn't be cost effective for me to visit a tutor or have them visit me.
You could always get an online tutor, there's plenty to choose from for pretty much any language.
One thing to do (that's cheaper and takes off some of the pressure compared to having a tutor) is chat online with native speakers of the language you're trying to learn who want to learn your language. There are websites that match people up in this way, it's an engaging and effective way to learn a language with the correct pronunciation.

There's so much software, the best advice is just to get several (free) versions and put whatever it is you care about through all of them. If you don't mind spending money do the same but with the paid versions of software, some (but not all) are better.
