They are very similar yes. In South Africa Afrikaans men are referred to as Boere(farmers) or Dutchmen. It might not sound like it but they are used as derogatory terms. I wear the labels with pride though.

Even though Afrikaans is greatly influenced by Dutch, even being referred to as Kitchen Dutch at one point, it is also greatly influenced by French. My French forefathers embarked on 'Die Oosterland' to South Africa from Delft in the Netherlands.  

Hi everyone. I am a native South African. My home language is Afrikaans, but I studied English at school. I am currently learning Tswana through a friend, but I really want to learn French. I am also open to help someone with Afrikaans.

As the title states I am eager to start learning French. I love doing genealogical research and have discovered that I am descendant of the French Huguenots. I have research my family history back to 1668 and this was easy as all the documents were in Afrikaans or French. I now want to delve deeper, but I will only be able to do so by reading French records. The area that I am interested in is in Nismes, Languedoc. Is there a specific dialect of French I should learn and where is the best place to start?
