present perfect vs present simple

I just found out that present simple can be used to denote completed actions with the meaning of the present perfect (with the verbs to forget, to hear, to be told).
For example, I want to tell my friend that I no longer possess the knowledge of his telephone number. Should say I forget your phone number or I have forgotten your phone number?

Thanks in advance!
