  1. I disagree compleatly, Hindi will not go away anytime soon. Actually I think it's growing, for example I know people from Nepal,Guyana, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who can communicate in basic Hindi from watching Hindi movies. Also I'm not sure about in India, but here in the United States I meet many Marathi's, Gujarati, and Punjabi's that can speak Hindi and use it to speak with other Indians. We are also forgetting that Hindi and Urdu spoken are mutually intelligible and Urdu is deffintly not going any time soon in Pakistan. Hindi and Urdu both has tons of media, has a lot of literature and has over 200 million speakers. I see Hindi getting more important instead of declining. Also both Hindi and Urdu are on the United States Critical languages list and is offered at a lot of big universties here, so I really don't think it will go extinct.

  2. I keep learning French because I had it for four years in school. I was allowed to pick from Spanish, German and French and I honestly don't know why I took French, I think big reason was beacuse everyone was taking Spanish and I wanted to be in smaller class and I think my gudiance consuleor told me German was really hard so I ended up with French :P

  4. I have tried most of these methods for Hindi. I went through a whoel phase where besides school and talking to my friends and family, I tried to everything in Hindi. I have Hindi tv channels and that would be the only thing I watched, along with Hindi movies only, I also only tried to do Hindi websites (which was hard because most of my favorite websites don't have Hindi versions. There were a couple problems while doing this. The first one was,(which probably wouldn't happen with Japanese) is that Hindi speakers on TV/Radio/Movies almost always mix english in. So no matter what you are watching you will probably hear English sometimess. This didn't happen as much with the Indian serials on tv, but still when it went to comerical, most of them would be in English. It wasn't a huge problem though and it was still useful. Another problem I had with this method, is although its great for vocabulary, pronuciation and pretty much everything else, it's bad for grammar. Although I was starting to pick up grammar naturally, still in my grammar there is a lot of mistakes. I have a few grammar books now trying to correct this problem. I would be able to regonize and understand some of the harder grammar using this method, but trying to produce it was difficult. Besides these two things, I think this method is great for learning any language. I think it would be hard to do for some languages though, because some languages there just isn't engough in it to do something like this. For example, here in the United States I think it would be very hard to find Swahili TV.

  5. I'm curious why Sanskrit is still taught in Indian schools. While it does still have a very strong influence on Indian culture, Sanskrit as a spoken language is extinct. Most Europeans do not learn Latin or Ancient Greek anymore, and having a distinction in Sanskrit language studies will not guarantee a high-paying job.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think that Sanskrit is used for a lot of Hindu relegious cermonies. It's also (I think) what most Hindu scriptures  were written in, I know it can be translated but I guess it doesn't give the same meaning. I'm not sure about Europe but here in the United States some schools still do have an option to take Latin.

  6. Hello Meera. I think that's Asin in your avatar, right?

Nice to see people interested in learning Hindi. I am curious though, is it true that Bollywood movies are/were really big in Afghanistan at one point of time?

Yes, it is Asin. :D  Yeah,it's true, Bollywood was huge and still is huge in Afghanistan. I think I can safely say that most Afghans like to watch Bollywood :)

  7. Hello everyone! My name is Meera. I'm orginally from Afghanistan but I live in the United States now, in Philadelphia. I love learning languages, my biggest interest is Hindi and other South Asian languages, but I am also interested in Arabic, Turkish, Indonesian and Farsi and French. I also have an interest in the east asian languages liek Japanese, Chinese and Korean but I haven't studdied any of them yet :P

  8. For me, it has been Arabic. Well Modern Standard Arabic, the grammar is very hard, the prounciation takes a lot of practice to get right and it's just a nightmar. Plus, all Arabs speak a local dialect so if you only speak MSA and go to Egypt or Morroco you won't understand anything. Another language that was hard for me was Armenian, not becaue of the language but because sources were so hard for me to find on it.
