  1. What made you want to learn a new language? For me it all started because I had to take a foreign language in school and Spanish was the only one they offered at that time. I loved it from the beginning and it was something I was good at. It made me want to know more and more. What made you want to learn?
  2. It's not necessary to know a second language to be successful in life. World wide businesses speak mostly English so if you know that most likely you will be set. However, it makes you a much more well rounded person, you are able to learn easier and understand things a lot better. It is a great experience to be able to communicate with other cultures of people.
  3. I got my endorsement in ESL when I was getting my teaching degree. I knew that it was a pretty good endorsement to have and it would go really well with the area I wanted to teach in and what I wanted to to with my career.
  4. I am in the process of learning Mandarin for a trip I am going on this summer. This is only my third language that I am learning and it is pretty difficult to get.
  5. I learned to speak a fictional language called Double Dutch in high school. It is when you remove the first consonant of the word and add it to the end of the word. My friends and I would speak it all the time to communicate, we were actually pretty good. I never lost this language either as I can still speak it fluently today. I have some students that are just amazed because they were speaking it and I knew what they were saying. It was pretty funny actually once they learned that a "teacher" could do that too,
  6. For me it is writing. I have always found it difficult to write a foreign language and get everything correct on it. I can speak to and understand native foreign speakers a lot easier than people who are learning the language too, but I think that writing is the most difficult part of learning a foreign language.
  7. Go browse through the library or a book store and pick out a book that looks absolutely amazing to you. Maybe it is just the title or the cover looks good. Just pick it up and read the back and see if it draws you in. I think being amongst the books and being able to pick them up and choose one you know you will love will get you out of your slump that you are in. Good luck!!
  8. I love to read and am constantly doing so. It is really hard to pick just one book. I could probably make this post really long with all my favorite books. If I had to choose just one though, I would choose The Giver by Lois Lowry. This book was such an eye opener to me. As I read it, it started to really become believable that our world could end up the way Jonas's world was. Everything became set for them even to the point where they knew when they would go to the House of the Old. It was such an amazing read, if you haven't read it, I urge you to before the movie comes out.
  9. I have a hard time with ELY words like definitely. I am always writing it definitley and then having to look at it closely and redoing it. I am slowly trying to train myself on this mistake that I am constantly making with these words. I am a fairly good speller other than those words.
  10. I am an extremely fast reader and when asked to read out loud I always would speed read and no one would understand what I was saying. I have really had to work at being able to read aloud so that it sounds good. I teach so I am reading out loud a lot and I still work at not speeding up when I am reading to my students.
  11. I always thought writing LOL was really silly and then people started texting it to me, so I would use it sarcastically. I still actually use it sarcastically but I really try not to use it at all. Most of my friends know that I think it is pretty silly to write that. I was walking down the hall at my work the other day and heard someone actually say LOL in a conversation that they were having. It starts to drive you crazy at the types of things that are going on with our language.....LOL
  12. I began learning Spanish with textbooks and in a classroom. I taught English to Spanish speaking children and when I was speaking to them they would laugh hysterically. I was told that my Spanish was so formal that it sounded completely wrong to them and thats why they thought it was so funny. I since have learned the more familiar language and grammar and have become a lot more proficient in communicating with my students.

    Hello

Hello, I am new to this forum as of yesterday and am very excited to be a member. I am proficient in English and Spanish and am currently learning Mandarin for a trip I am taking soon. I am excited to meet you fellow linguaholics and hope to learn a lot from you about learning languages.
  14. I have used Spanish in my job, actually knowing it is what helped me get my job so it has been really useful and helpful. I am studying Mandarin now to go on a trip this summer with some friends. It is a fun language to learn and I like learning new languages as a hobby.
  15. I like to study with friends so we can communicate with one another and immerse ourselves in the language for a time. A few of us are learning Mandarin right now and it is fun to go to the local restaurant that they have here and practice on some of the employees.
  16. I like to start out with a tutor so that I can get the basics down like the sounds and the basic accent. Once I have that down, I like to go about it on my own. I find that I can study a language more and be more proficient at it if I can sit down when I have time and study rather than meeting with a tutor. They are always helpful at the beginning for me though.
