Online if you're just starting, like simple quizzes just to get you going. Everything else offline. Learning grammar, reading, pronunciation and conversations are best learnt and practiced offline (of course if you have someone to practice with).

I've used free sites exclusively due to time restraints. I really don't feel I'd get anything better using paid sites. There's so much knowledge and information available for free on the internet (lessons, radio, podcasts, books) that there's almost no reason to use sites you have to pay for. I guess if you need a quick and direct information on a topic, maybe someone to practice conversation than it might be better and easier to consider a paid site.

I've seen Goddar's Pierrot le fou recently: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059592/ It's an absolute must watch. The cinematography is brilliant (wouldn't expect anything less from Goddar) and the movie is one of the best ''road'' movies I've seen.

I'd really love to learn Russian. Although my native tongue (BCS) belongs to the Slavic group of languages there are many (maybe even more) differences than there are similarities. For us (BCS speakers) it's easier to read and understand than it is to understand someone speaking Russian. A big problem is the difference in the way words are accented in Russian. We share a lot of similar words but there are many that are written and sound the same way but have quite different meanings in Russian and BCS.

Learning French is definitely easier if you have prior knowledge of English. However I've found that Latin, which is a language we have to learn in middle school, has also helped. A simple example would be sum, es, est - suis, es, est. Of course there are a lot of other similarities.

You learn something new every day and I honestly didn't know that. Is English taught at school? Over here we have a semi choice in what other language we want to learn, but it's down to English or German and there are maybe 2 or 3 schools in the whole country where you learn French.

I have to admit that I'm not even sure how I learnt it. I guess it was the combination of watching Cartoon Network from a very young age coupled with having to learn it at elementary school. Generally speaking English language is almost a second language in my country since most of the people, especially younger ones, have no trouble comprehending and using it.

In a few days I'll be having a test in French with the main subject being concordance des temp. I have a few examples that I'll be translating tomorrow or the day after and if there's anyone interested in checking if I've translated the said sentences right I could post them here?
