Do you prefer British English or American?
CosmicSeven replied to VNtomboy's topic in English Language | Discussion
I prefer American English for a variety of reasons, mostly the u's bug me. I dislike the word colour but I also dislike simple words that use unnecessary and inefficient letters. There is no reason to keep using them, but people do with zero logical basis in mind - it's just a taught thing. -
Your biggest language learning problem
CosmicSeven replied to Nishikata's topic in Language Learning
As of right now, my biggest problem is just getting the tonality of the Thai language down. It's extremely difficult to go from written verbal words to sounds when there is such a degree of difference between them, and it's quite frustrating. -
Does the genre of music you like change in different languages?
CosmicSeven replied to wolfette's topic in Language Learning
There's nothing that I've found in thai that suits my tastes, but I definitely love the happy funky folk asian vibe thing they have going in a lot of their music. I dont know if I'll find something more my style there but hey, I'm down to learn more about music from an asian country -
Your biggest language learning problem
CosmicSeven replied to Nishikata's topic in Language Learning
My biggest problem is associating the alphabet to the words and the words to the sentences. That little period of time where I have to think makes everything awkward and I often lose my train of though mid sentence. -
I definitely remember being told I was going to need cursive for the rest of my life, and I definitely didn't even need it for highschool. I had 1 teacher that forced it on us and the rest nobody cared about. It is outdated and doesn't make sense to force on people for such little use.

I'm currently learning thai and the difficulty of it is palpable. It's kind of overwhelming to have so many different vocal inflections for so many words, but I am making my way through it all and trying to get as much done as I can before I arrive.

Do you think learning languages benefit you in any way?
CosmicSeven replied to mareebaybay's topic in Language Learning
Well I need the language for where I'm moving, so yes it helps lol It is more about making sure that I can do things as effectively as possible there, but learning the language is also helping me transition to the idea of being more comfortable with traveling around the world, which is a dream of mine. -
Is it easier to learn new languages as you learn more?
CosmicSeven replied to GennevierAnderson's topic in Language Learning
From what I've heard, yes. It is like anything else, if you have the skill of learning a language, you will know how to do it faster and more efficiently. That in turn allows you to accelerate yourself and avoid the obstacles that people just learning a single language have to deal with. -
I play an instrument and it's one of the reasons that I have confidence with learning thai. It is the ultimate expression in figuring out how to translate sounds into obscure meaning, so having a sound with a strict meaning that has rules and specifics isn't that bad in contrast to musical notes.

I'm currently in the process of learning thai, and it's a HUGE language to undertake. I have very little foreign language experience, and this forum popped up in my life right in time I'd love to chat and figure out what's going on with lots of other foreign languages as I'd love to be one of those people that can speak 7 languages but hey, gotta start slow
