I'm studying Kafka's Metamorphosis, and noticed that at first the narrator refers to Gregor's midsection as "Bauch", then to "Unterleib", and wondered if this could show his attitude towards his transformation changing. Is Bauch used more for humans and Unterleib for insects, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I would say that this is correct.
