  1. I know just a tiny bit. However, you can buy programs for learning sign language. Some homeschoolers use it to meet their foreign language requirements for college applications.
  2. I think that it didn't work for me because I learn differently than they teach. I can't seem to picture how verb conjugations work. I need to picture the list of conjugations and understand rules. With Rosetta Stone, you just start learning various phrases. They work on the conjugations, but without actually explaining the rules. I like the way I learned German in high school 28 years ago, with a text book. Dry but what I seem to need. Live Mocha is very similar to Rosetta Stone, and when I used it before, it was free.
  3. Oooh, it worked. I don't know what my problem was yesterday. Thanks!
  4. This is way beyond me! Maybe a cat. But I have no rhyme to give back. I can give you a funny word though - Slugabed : Yup, it's real. According to merriam-webster.com a person who stays in bed after the usual or proper time to get up; I even taught my kids.
  5. American English is my native tongue. I had to take a language to get into college. My father suggested German. I am about 1/3 German, so that seemed fun. We only had German and Spanish at our school anyway. I am really glad I learned German. I hear it from time to time, and it is nice to know that I can understand a little bit of what is going on. I want my children to learn Spanish though. There are a lot of people surrounding us who speak Spanish, so I think it will be useful. Also, my SIL speaks Spanish as her first language, so it is a nice connection.
  6. "es tut mir leid" or literally, "it does me pain". I often feel that when we make our kids say "I'm sorry" it is just this random thing. The kids don't understand. They just think "I have to say this to get out of the situation" but "It does me pain". Now that is real. If I have acted wrongly towards someone - then it should "do me pain" if I really care. "alles Gute zu deinem Geburtstag!" - Happy Birthday. I say it to all of the kids.
  7. I have a feeling that we are just going to have to try them and after a while we will find a pattern.
  8. I have tried to learn Spanish on Rosetta Stone. For some reason it was really difficult for me. This fall I am going to sit in on classes that my sons are taking. Then we can make it a family adventure! Has Rosetta stone worked well for you?
  9. It would be great if spell check didn't show up in a different window.
  10. Hi, I know this is an old post, but I have been diagramming sentences with my son. I always thought it was really hard to do and a chore, but since I am homeschooling my son and he isn't forced to do it, he is actually interested and finds it fun. If you could give me an example of such sentence, then I could diagram it for you. We are using this curriculum for grammar - Royal Fireworks Press by Michael Clay Thompson http://www.rfwp.com/series/grammar-elementary-program-by-michael-clay-thompson#book-grammar-island There is a workbook that has the correct answers. I am really happy to learn or relearn this for myself. Best, Jennifer
  11. I am so exited about this forum! I know a little German and love it. I want the kids to learn Spanish, which means we all learn it. But maybe in a few years, I'll introduce German into the household. FWIW - We have a super fun family for an American family. I have a SIL whose first language is Spanish AND a SIL whose first language is French.
