Have you ever given up on learning a language?
writeletters replied to melisapink's topic in Language Learning
I have given up. I started French before I got to high school, then found out they didn't offer it until you were a few years in. I kept going for a year, and then it slowly died away because of too much other work. I may one day decide to go back to it, however. -
There are lots of web-based programs which claim to work. There is a website I'd recommend for memorising vocabulary. Memrise.com I think one good way to learn would be taking a course, be it online or within your community.

What Makes You Decide You Want to Learn a Language?
writeletters posted a topic in Language Learning
I'm curious. I'm wondering what it is exactly that makes us decide 'hey, that's a language I want to learn!'. Maybe it's the way it's spoken. Maybe it's a place you'd one day like to visit. Maybe someone in your family speaks it. Whatever it is, I want to know how you choose a language to learn. -
The right way to say it is "Did you receive it?". Easy mistake to make, the English language is a bit complicated! Are you learning English?

I actually find it outrageous when someone confuses these two. I mean, we learned this stuff at the age of, what, six or seven? And still, in adulthood, people use them incorrectly. It's definitely one of my pet peeves.

New York teenage prodigy speaks 20 languages!

That's crazy cool! :amazed: Oh my god! I always thought it'd be super cool to know heaps of languages secretly, and if I ever got into a spot of international gang trouble, I could surprise my friends with a dash of Russian or German or some other international language. -
What is Hardest- Reading, Writing, or Speaking?
writeletters replied to tulosai's topic in Language Learning
In another language I always find the hardest thing to be speaking. It's hard to suddenly have to learn new ways of pronouncing letters and sounds. It's always a bit crazy at first, until you get used to it. I think reading, however, is relatively easy because you can find similar looking words. -
I'd probably want to learn Japanese. I've heard they have a very nice culture, I also know for a fact that they have very nice food. More importantly, my friends are currently learning the language, so it would be cool to be able to speak with them in Japanese.

How long have you gone without verbal communication?
writeletters replied to sayitwell's topic in Language Learning
Oh wow! I don't think I could ever go without speaking for more than a few hours! I mean, even that is hard, especially if you people around you or nearby. I do remember once, a couple of years ago, for the 40hr Famine in NZ, I tried to go without speaking for forty hours. That failed!
