  1. I like Welsh accents and Australian accents. Only to listen to, I'm not sure if I could handle hearing myself speak like that all the time. Not being racist, of course. I just mean to say that it's nice to hear every once in a while, but I prefer my own accent, thanks (New Zealand).
  2. English is the main language in our country, so yes, it is a huge part of our education. In my original country (India), it's a big part of education and it's generally the second or third language of anyone living there.
  3. What's your favourite English movie? Why? I movie I really enjoy watching is 'The Sound of Music' because of the music in it, the memories of watching them when I was younger, and just generally because it is a good movie. Big plus: Julie Andrews!
  4. No. I think my friends and I agree that 'LOL' is such an over-used term that it doesn't deserve to be used. We, instead, use a few 'ha's to express out approval. It's a much better way.
  5. That's a great quote! I haven't heard it before. Here's one by J. R. R. Tolkien: "Not all who wander are lost." I think it's quite deep, if you think about it, and very interesting. It could also be seen as somewhat inspiring.
  6. Yeah, this happens to me sometimes. Luckily, my mother is always around for me to ask questions!
  7. I'm currently learning my fourth language, and my teacher doesn't put a lot of emphasis on grammar, but when he teaches, he teaches with the correct grammar. Also, if you make a mistake he will correct you, but he won't do it in a way which makes you think you did it very badly.
  8. Google Translate looks handy, and it is for simple phrases, common phrases. But it isn't a reliable way of translating things. A better option would be to get a dictionary and define words and figure it out for yourself.
  9. I learned my second and my third languages in my first three/four years. I was born in a country where people spoke multiple languages, and even after moving to another country where it is almost uncommon to speak two or more languages, I love it.
  10. I like the word quarrelsome. :wacky: I basically like any word with a Q in it, because they sound cool!
  11. I wouldn't want to learn a language unless there were other people I could communicate with using it. I'm sure I would learn one if I could also convince some of my friends to learn it with me.
  12. It's definitely quite world-wide. Spanish is spoken in a lot of places around the world and it has a lot of speakers. If you want to travel and want to learn at least one language, then yeah, Spanish is probably the best.
  13. I'd suggest thinking about where you want to be in a few years, and decide depending on that. I mean, if you wanted to move to a particular country, you should learn that language. Apart from that, if you want to stay put, Chinese, Spanish, these are good languages for the future.
  14. Number one, practice. Even if you're just talking to yourself, it's worth it. Just babble away to yourself as this will help your pronunciation, your application of words in sentences (grammar, vocab, memory), you'll practice speaking in everyday situations. Best thing, just speak.
  15. I guess the types of resources. I've never found a language appealing if it lacks good resources to learn from. It's also nice when you know native speakers of the same language, it means you can converse with them and they can help you out should you need it.
  16. When you can't speak with another person in a particular language, do you find it slowly slips away from you? That's what happened to me with Hindi. It was my third language, but after moving countries, I had no one to speak to, and now I find myself constantly stumbling.
  17. I actually like any word with the letter ere in it. Such as murmurar, and aguardar. I like to roll my rs, which is something you cannot do in English, because people look at you weirdly. :speechless:
  18. I started learning Spanish in intermediate school and carried on learning it through high school. I chose it because it was a well known language and it looked like the Spanish had a very rich culture. I'm glad I chose to learn this language
  19. I think workbooks in general are pretty good. They help teach you the vocabulary and you can take learning the language in chapters rather than having it all scattered. I also find, for vocab, a website called memrise.com to be quite helpful.
  20. Spanish is a language worth learning because it is now widely spoken. This means you can travel to more places and meet more people. They also have a rich culture, with festivals and traditions that are worth learning about. And need I mention their food..
  21. "There are plenty more fish in the sea," is a phrase which is told to people who face breakups. It means there will always be someone else you can date, so to speak. There are always more people to meet, more places to go, that sort of thing.
  22. I've actually only read one: The Merchant of Venice. I liked it, and I look forward to reading more of Shakespeare's works. I liked it because it had a lot of underlying messages in it. I read it at the age of fourteen, and found it a bit difficult.
  23. They don't always mae explicit sense to everyone. You have to know the origins of each idiom to understand the full meaning of it. I think the bees knees just rhymes and sounds well put together - that's why I like it, at least. There are plenty of websites about idioms and their origins.
  24. I don't know about books, but plays... Shakespeare's plays are quite difficult, to say the least. I'm proud of myself for finishing The Merchant of Venice. It was grueling work, but at the end I felt like I'd achieved something, and was proud of myself.
  25. I love "changing the goalposts during the game". For me it has a lot of meaning. It's speaks to me of discipline and perseverance. It's like it's telling you to stick it through and not keep dilly-dallying, not bounce back and forth like a ping pong ball. :wacky:
