  1. I believe one cannot readily acquire fluency in a certain language in just 10 days! In learning a new language, there is no such quick formula as I always tell my Korean students. Some would just be studying an upcoming English exam in 2 weeks or so and they think they could get the target score for such major English tests like IELTS, TOEFL or TOEIC. If one decides to learn a new language, it takes time, commitment and constant practice to develop all skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening).

  2. I am not in any way embarrassed to speak in my second language which is English for my 2 professions require me to use it as a medium. :) I have honed my skills in this foreign language over the years and though I may still have some flaws using it, I believe native speakers and non-native English speakers like me can understand what I am saying and writing. Errors in grammar is but natural for foreigners like me and nobody can really be perfect in a certain language in my humble opinion.

  3. There are language centers and academies that teach ESL (English as a Second Language) for different non-native English speakers like Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, etc. If you want to teach ESL, you have to take up English courses like TESOL and other short term English courses after which you are provided with a certificate. I am an Online English Instructor for Koreans and have been teaching since 2007. I am enjoying my morning job aside from my other profession where I am a Writer in English. Some companies require certifications while others do not.

  4. A combination of studying in a group and self-study would be more effective I believe. :) While studying with a group of people enhances your interactive skills and you can brainstorm some ideas once in a while, self-study also helps you continuously learn on your own even without the help of other people. It is the same with attending classes and doing self-study at home.

  5. How young is your family member? He could be so young that he still cannot clearly understand the value of learning a second language. Some people also refuse to learn new things simply because they are afraid to go out of their comfort zones, frightened to commit mistakes and be the butt of jokes by other people. Or they could be too confident of themselves thinking they can learn new things all by themselves without bothering other people.

  6. As a Professional Writer myself, I practice writing my maintaining a blog site in my second language English. There are also a lot of writing prompts and exercises available in writing websites, you may want to check them out. Having your own journal or diary also helps you practice your writing. Teachers ask students to maintain a journal too for their writing exercises. You might want to have a notebook where you can write about almost anything you have experienced and from those you can structure a story or two. :)

  7. I am a Professional Writer and a Published International Poet myself so I know.  Yes, poetry allows breaking of certain grammatical rules as it is allowed in creative writing. If you haven't known yet, writers commonly break grammar rules and still come up with a masterpiece. Breaking rules don't necessarily mean giving up on the quality and essence of your pieces. Modernist poets compose pieces which have a lot of grammar errors but because the dancing words sound good, the poems become famous. Not all writers are  good in grammar I tell you.

  8. I am also a reader of Brain Pickings. I think I have come across with this article before. I agree with most of Zadie Smith's 10 Rules of Writing except No. 7 which says work on a computer that is disconnected with the internet. :) I can still write articles and compose poetry though I am online and surfing the net. I can also write with music as background and I have written and finished an article while at the center of a busy and noisy mall so No. 8 doesn't actually apply with me.

  9. I don't usually openly correct the grammatical mistakes of other people unless they ask me to. With my set of close friends though,we just make these errors butt of jokes along with correcting the person who made a mistake. It's not proper to immediately correct the grammar of another person in public for this would embarrass him. Discreetly tell him in private or if the need arises. :)

  10. Two of my professions require me to use my second language, English. I am both an English instructor and a professional writer in English. I have always been interested with the English language since I was still a student which helped me learn it well. I am enjoying my two jobs and I am also able to share my talent in writing using my second language.
