Learning another language should be continuous if one wants to really improve on his level like for instance learning English. The ability to learn the language fast and effectively for non-native English speakers depends on the individual himself and there is no definite time duration before one can say he is already fluent.

In our country, children start learning our second language English between the ages of 4-5 yrs. old in preschool. We are exposed to the English language and we often speak either straight English or a mixture of our native language and English so we can easily learn and understand it.

Yes, there are instances wherein I do forget some words in my native tongue and some words I am not that familiar with, too. Native words which have deeper meaning and are not used in conversations are forgotten once in a while.

The art of attentive listening is essential in obtaining good communication. Yes, I am a good listener first and foremost and not much of a talker. I am better in written form than in verbal being a writer  by profession. We can learn more by being observant and practicing careful listening.

I don't see any logical relationship between one's language and his earning capacity. One's hard work pays off no matter what language he speaks. If we base how much money one makes depending on his ethnicity or how many languages he knows, it's another kind of discrimination. Well, that's just my humble opinion.

My second language is English and others tell me I sound and write like a native speaker. They thought I have lived in the US or was born there, too. It's just that early on in preschool I was exposed to the English language and it has always been my favorite subject.

I remembered having a dream which was in English, my second language but it was just a rare occasion. It would be lovely to have a dream in French or in Portuguese though or in British English.

Yes, it is quite a privilege for one to have learned another language but making a fool out of someone by speaking the language  to his face that he cannot even understand is I think not appropriate. What if the tables turned on you and someone did the same thing to you?

English, being the universal language has the most speakers across the globe. French also I think and yes, Spanish.

Yes, we do speak a mixture of our native language and our second language English a lot in our country and we call it Taglish. "Tagalog" and "English".

I believe it is also very helpful to be exposed to the environment where the language is used. Some students really go abroad to immerse themselves with the language's culture. This can help them speak the language freely and at the same time learn and enjoy their travel.

"Couldn't care less" is grammatically correct and it should be the one used for proper English usage. "Could care less" would be acceptable maybe in an informal setting but not formal speaking or writing.

My Korean students told me they find it more difficult to learn Chinese than studying English because of the characters and different expressions used for adults and then another set for younger ones. I guess the difficulty lies in how one perceives about the language he is learning, too.

Telepathic powers I believe is one of the highest form of communication not all people possess. Since it it used to transmit an unspoken message through the mind, it is also a kind of language in one of the highest form.

If you haven't spoken a language for quite a while which can mean not being able to use it in years, you may have difficulty speaking it again but I believe you will not truly lose it. Your native tongue will always stick with you no matter where in the world you roam. I don't believe those who have immigrated in another country for just 3 yrs. and yet they claim they have totally forgotten how to speak their mother language.

Specifically what do you mean by "reading alone"? Do you mean learning a new language by just focusing on your reading skills?If you mean it that way, my reply would be: All areas reading, writing, speaking and listening skills must all be developed when learning a new language. Each skill compliments the other skills.

I think speaking with foreign friends help an individual learn a new language but the effectiveness lies in himself if he really wants to learn fast and develop his language skills. Talking with a foreigner will give one opportunities to learn more expressions used in the language.

Body language during the times of our ancestors play an important role in communication, the same thing during our present time. Our movements together with our facial expression expresses what we are thinking long before we have spoken.

I believe children should be taught a second language when they are 5-6 years old. During these ages, they will be able to absorb well what is being taught. Under 5 years, kids would still not be focused. In our country, children learn English our second language at 5-6 years old, too.

I used to do the sms thing which are really short, short messages but now I have gone back to typing the whole words when I send a text. I also find it annoying to receive or read sms which you cannot really make out of for they seem to appear more likes codes or something.

We can know if someone or a group of people are talking about us in their language maybe through their body languages, hand movements or facial expressions. When you catch them sneaking a glance at you then back again to the one they are talking to.

English is already the universal language and not just a world language first and foremost. I believe it would benefit all if we will just speak one language like we used to do before men built the Tower of Babel. One language, one world=peace.

I believe even though one is quite fluent in a certain language, one can still feel conscious of the way he speaks in front of other people. I do care about what others think about the way I talk but not to the extent of losing my self-esteem or confidence. I just think that all of us have flaws and nobody is too perfect in any way whether one is fluent in a language or not.

It used to be one of my favorite exercises in my English subject way back in high school. It can  be tough yes, if you're going to diagram phrases or compound sentences containing separate phrases. As what the others here have commented, it is better if you provide us a sample of what phrase you have difficulty diagramming with.

I have a lot of native English speaker friends and I don't think they just know their language. Some also learned different languages like everybody does learn their English language. Oops, sorry redundancy there.
