  1. Yes! The same thing happened with me in Spanish. I took IB Spanish in high school and it was really tough. They basically squeezed in a 4 year programme into 2 so obviously the pace that we were going at was crazy. I had to spend an hour everyday so I wouldn't fall behind in class. I was so close to dropping out but I stuck it out because I thought about all the time I had invested. Thank god I made the right decision.
  2. I had the same problem with Spanish before. Even now, I sometimes need to dictionary to find the right words or phrases to use. Sometimes, I'll get stuck in the middle of a conversation. I'm not sure if there's really another way beside from practicing. But maybe you can get into fun activities like reading the newspaper or watching a movie in French. Or even listening to music. This might help
  3. It's better to start off at a young age. The older I got, the harder I found to learn a new language. Since we moved around a lot, I picked up quite a few languages along the way but since I was out of practice, I've forgotten most of them. So even if you learn it at a young age, you still need to practice because it's just as easily for a child to learn and then forget it. This is an interesting article I found if anyone wants to check it out: http://www.goethe.de/ges/spa/pan/spg/en7142444.htm
  4. Thanks for the post. Finally, I can understand this song. I was actually looking up at translations before but I didn't know if it was quite right in the first place. I love the line "A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all". I think it's true that a girl doesn't have to bare it all to define the word 'sexy'.
  5. It depends on the subject. If it's something that weighs a lot, I get so stressed that I wouldn't even be able to sleep properly at night. When I get too stressed before it, I try reading or watching something funny to distract myself. That takes the weight off of my shoulder just a bit.
  6. My German teacher spoke 7 different languages; English, Thai, Hindi, Spanish, French, German and Mandarin. He was absolutely brilliant. He told me that it came to him naturally and that he found learning a new language easier than math or biology or anything for that matter. Plus, he was really good with all the accent too.
  7. I was born in California but moved around quite a bit because of my dad's job. When I came back to the states, people told me I sounded weird. It's not american or british or anything. It's just got a different ring to it I guess. I made so many friends with different background so I guess mine is just a huge cluster of different accents.
  8. I believe i'm a kinesthetic learner. I definitely can't sit for too long. I'm always looking for something to do. Sometimes, I study two subjects at a time because I get too bored. I take way too many breaks while studying I do love multiple choice and I have noticed that solving 'real-life' problems have helped me in the past, especially with mathematics and science.
  9. I took the PSAT and didn't do that well so I worked really hard and took the SAT the next year. But there wasn't a lot of difference. I guess i'm not really good with aptitude tests even though my gpa was above average. So, I had to apply to colleges with SAT optionals.
  10. I mainly use online tutorial only for learning new vocabulary. I don't think it can really teach you as a physical teacher can. Especially with grammar and slangs. But I agree there are some really fun youtube videos to watch. Sometimes, I play a few word games as well.
  11. I use LOL only when there's nothing else to say or I don't really feel like typing anymore. Yes, I know it's pretty bad on my part. I use "lmao" when i'm actually laughing out loud. The most common term I use though is "haha". It just comes naturally and I'll only noticed that I typed it after sending it. Oh, silly me!
  12. I think it's solely depends on what i'm reading. If I'm reading a novel or something then I don't read out loud and am quite fast. But if i'm reading books for college then I tend to read slowly and out loud so it really gets into my head.
  13. I've tried and miserably failed at it. I guess my hearing is just impaired or something Instead of listening to music, I watch movies. Plus with the help of subtitles I find it a little easier.
  14. Hello, Would someone be kind enough to explain the difference between Sanskrit and Hindi? Which is more difficult to learn and why? If I learn one of the language, would it be easier for me to learn the other? Thanks in advance!
  15. I love the script! It's so beautiful. I'd be more than happy to learn the scripts, could you please provide the links for it?
  16. I agree with many that speaking is the hardest out of the three. I'm usually good with writing and reading all though I'll make some mistakes here. But when it comes to speaking, I just freeze. I think it takes a while for my brain to process speech production when it comes to foreign languages. I can listen and understand what is being said but I just can't seem to reciprocate. I always hated oral presentations when I was in school.
  17. I admit, I used google translate ALOT when I was in high school studying Spanish. But it does more harm then good I think. It's only good when you want to translate simple sentences like "I love dogs" or just one word. If it is a complicated sentence, it will not make sense at all a lot of the times. I remember making a huge mistake the first month of course where I just copied the translated text. It's always best to just do it on your own with the help of a dictionary in my opinion because google translator or any translator will not be 100% reliable.
  18. Till 6th to 8th Grade, I studied French but I dropped it when I was in 9th Grade because it wasn't required anymore. Now I can't even remember most of it except for a few words and slangs. But when I was in 11th Grade, I started the IB programme and had to choose a language. I dreaded this part the most because I've never been good at learning languages even though I really wanted to! So I picked Spanish. It was tough at first but made it a habit to learn 10 words everyday and read a paragraph or two in Spanish. That really helped me and now, I guess i'm semi-fluent in it.
