  1. Writing in a language would seem to have more rules that are easier to follow. The rules are written down and are not really subject to cultural changes and trends, which are the riles that are not really written down. I know from experience that it is a whole lot easier to write the languages that I have learned or attempted to learn, but then again it might just depend on what language you are dealing with. I am sure that the Arabic and Asian languages are very hard to write too.
  2. Well I have always been told to load up on fiber when you are studying or learning, because that is the "brain food", so I have always tried to munch of nuts and popcorn while I study. I cannot really say that it definitely works, but I would like to think that it does. It makes sense, because fiber keeps you full so your body can devote more energy to the brain and less on the digestive system. So I would just load up on some almonds and some popcorn if I were you.
  3. That would be a really interesting service to use. I was unaware that you could do that, but it really does make sense to a lot of us who can use music to our advantage. They say that everyone learns in their own way, and this is just further proof of that in my opinion. If people can use it to learn a different language easier than I am glad that these companies recognize that and allow the tools for us to use.
  4. I remember taking a Latin course in high school and it was one of the hardest courses that I have ever taken, to this day. That said, though, it was extremely valuable in learning the origin of the words that we use and it really helps if you are pursuing a law career, which is what our teacher always told us to ensure that we did not keep repeating that it was a dead language. Be aware that it is difficult, but it is also highly rewarding.
  5. I have always thought that Arabic has the most beautiful script, and I am pretty sure that it would be the hardest to learn. I also really like the Chinese script, and also that one is probably really difficult to learn. I would be very interested to read a story on the history of the script because I am sure that there are some good stories that we can still relate to these days.
  6. I remember when I was taking classes in Italian before my trip there this man's name came up, and people seems to have a good impression of his work, but I have not really seen much of him or know a while lot of what he does. If he is a successful though, I am glad that he his making his services available for others to benefit from. It does sound like he has some issues with his accent though, and that would certainly make things a little more difficult if you hare trying to learn a new language.
  7. Absolutely, and I think that is really the main idea of translation in that you cannot really translate everything. Words have different meanings to different people of different ages and they have cultural contexts to them that get lost in translation. If you are interested in reading about literary theory and its ties to culture and language, you should read some Frantz Fanon. He was a French born Algerian who is interested in colonialism and the language that they use to oppress and how they twist words. It is interesting stuff.
  8. I would think that both services offer pretty much the same expertise when it comes to translations, and that is not that much. You are probably better off using a legitimate translating site, but if those are going to cost you something then I can see why you would want to avoid them, but I am pretty sure that there are some free ones out there. I guess the only real way to figure it out is by trial and error and see which ones give you the best results.
  9. I have personally not tried this but I have to say that it sounds like an intriguing option. Skype seems to offer everything that you would need to have a successful interaction with a teacher or a tutor in a new language, and it probably has many benefits over more traditional services that we see online. I am definitely going to do a little more research into this, because I can really use some new tools to complete my learning of a new language because I have hit a bit of a wall.
  10. I have tried Rosetta Stone and I have to say that I was a little disappointed. Just doing some research I have found several other resources that seem to offer the same sorts of tools that it does, but it is much cheaper and seemingly easier to use. I am not the best with new formats and new technologies, so the easier and the simpler is the better option for me, and I would rather choose one of these other ones than go with Rosetta Stone again. I am open to suggestions though, and I figure this is a good place to turn to.
