So, what are homonyms? No, they're not that .

Just in case you don't already know this, homonyms are words that are both spelled and pronounced the same, but may have different meanings.

Here are a few examples:

Bat - that cylindrical-shaped piece of wood used to beat up people :devil:, and to play baseball;

And that creepy flying mammal that is associated with vampires :vampire:.

Fine - of high quality, for instance, when you say: "Damn, that girl has a fine....uhm....dress! :wacky:";

It also means penalty (no, I'm not talking about football ) or financial punishment.

Here we go:

True homonyms:

Bank - where you keep your money.

      - sloping land on the side of a rive.

      - have confidence in someone.

Change - modify.

          - replace with another.

          - put on a new set of clothes.

Deck    - get struck down.

          - decorate.

And other homonyms:

Days- quite obvious.

Daze - what you experience when someone whacks you on the head.

      - the feeling you get when she tells you "it's over between us."

Here are some more homonyms:

Adder:

- Someone who adds up numbers

- A type of snake (aka viper)

Furrier:

- More furry

- Someone who works with animal furs, for example making fur coats

Spring:

- The season that comes after winter

- A pool of water that comes from underground

- To suddenly jump up of forward

- To originate from (to spring from)

- A metal coil used to absorb shocks or movement, for example in a mattress or vehicle

Bark:

- The sound a dog makes in greeting or warning

- The tough brown 'skin' on the exterior of a tree trunk

Die:

- To come to the end of one's life, cease to exist or function

- The plural of 'dice'

- A metal tool or mould used to shape a metal or plastic object (for example: die-cast toy soldiers)

"Set" is probably the most proportional homonym you can find in English. There are so many definitions and methods of using it.

"Hand" is another good one, with a couple of definitions beyond the physical body part.

I generally find homonyms very interesting. These are the words which are spelled and pronounced similarly but have different meanings when used in different situations. For instance, the word bear is used for denoting the animal species when used as a noun and when it is used as a verb it means that you are putting up with or tolerating something. There are a number of homonyms which exist in the English language.
