I am studying ancient Chinese and at that time this would have been a grammatically correct sentence.I will give you a hint:the character 之 at that time had a lot of different meanings. It could be a pronoun, an object, a verb, and even an adjective. So if you know all these meanings of 之, you can reconstruct the meaning of this sentence.
