It depends on how much fluency you are talking about. It would take me many years to be perfectly fluent and native sounding. But i think it would take me only one year, with total immersion, to be able to speak fluently in a non-perfect way. I did a study abroad in Italy for a summer. By the end I was surprised how good I got and how quickly it happened. It took me years to learn what I did that summer in the States.

Yes it has happened to me before, but rarely. I prefer to argue in my native language because it's easier. I'd rather think of good responses then think of translations. Plus, my american accent ruins most arguments. It's so strong, and people can't always understand me. My ex-es have definitely laughed at me when I try cursing in their language.

Yo no escribo español perfectamente, pero yo pienso "escucho" es mejor en este caso que "oigo". Escucho significa "I listen". Oigo significa "I hear". Learning grammar is hard in every language, including native ones. I'm still learning grammatical rules for English. Anyway, to answer your question, the best way to improve your grammar is through reading. And then through writing. But again, reading is first because books will show you what you are lacking. It's hard to know what you are lacking when you don't know what you are lacking. I'd also recommend you read mostly non-fictions. Fictions are notorious for bad grammar. Fiction writers don't have to follow rules or guidelines like APA guidelines.

UPDATE: Hey everyone!!! I thought I'd write an update for this thread because I started watching telenovelas again. Woohoo!!! I fell upon a station by accident about a month ago that plays old Telemundo telenovelas, all day long. Sweet!!! And the best part, they are playing a telenovela I fell in love with years ago called Dame Chocolate with Carlos Ponce. I seriously never get tired of looking at him. They are also playing Madre Luna, another great drama. So, yah, I've been really happy lately The best part to all of this: I'm watching the two telenovelas without any caption or subtitles. And guess what, I'm understanding them. Woohoo!!! I'm soooo proud of myself. I read through some of the recent comments, and I have to agree that many of the telenovelas out there are really cheesy. I refuse to watch many of them because I don't like what I call "stupid comedies". The good thing is I like romance. And most telenovelas seem to revolve around crazy, super dramatic romances. Oh Well... Anyway, if you want to go this route, you have to do some searching and experimenting. Over the years, I've learned that Telemundo telenovelas are more my thing than the other Latin stations in the US.

That's a very interesting question... I had to take a minute to think. There's a lot media available in all the languages I like, but there's not a lot media that I am really interested in. That's what makes this question interesting. For example, for Spanish, I like watching telenovelas and listening to Latin music. But that's it. In French, I only like a few musicians. Unfortunately, I'm not pulled to their style of cinematography. I don't study Hindi now, but if one day I decide to study it again, I love Hindi / Bollywood movies and Indian music. And for Greek, I only like some Greek music and that's it.

I agree... A few years ago, I decided to study Hindi for a summer. It's something I just wanted to do for fun since I love Bollywood movies. And when I went to the book store to buy a learning manual, I was surprised how few books/manuals they had for Hindi. There were a ton for French, Italian and Spanish of course. If I remember correctly, I had a choice of 2 books. And both I didn't really like. But I did buy one in the end. If I ever decide to learn Hindi again, I will buy my books/manuals online. I may even look for classes online too.

I don't think there is ever a bad enough reason to learn a language. Not to mention, stupid versus smart... that's a really relative determination. What is stupid for you may not be stupid for someone else. And what may interest you, may not interest another. I'm a girl who loves romance. So, I would totally learn another language for a guy I am in love with. But some people would say that's stupid. Well, it's the same for pornography. I may not like it, but there are people out there who are obsessed with it. And may even do a better job at learning a language than me because of their obsessions. Personally I think studying languages is just important, period, whether it's a few words or complete fluency. So, whatever it takes to get you interested and then keep you interested, I'm all for it.

Pero California tiene varios climas y paisajes, y entonces mucho diferentes actividades - playas, surfing, desiertos, montañas, bosques, nieve, hiking, snowboarding/skiing, valles de vino y olivos... También es muy progresiva. Una gran cantidad de movimientos holístico, yoga, y ecológico prosperan allí. Florida es predominantemente llano. Es muy diversa culturalmente cuando se trata de inmigrantes de América Latina y del Caribe. [California tiene una mezcla diferente de inmigración - mucho Mexicanos, Asiáticos, Isleños del Pacífico] Pero Florida es "Sur". Entonces, tiene tendencias del sur, y eso es un otro tema. Es muy húmedo. Es una mezcla de playa y pantano. Pero es muy vibrante y bella con cielos azules brillantes, palmeras, buganvillas, casas pintadas en colores claros, y mucho plantas frutales. En este aspecto, es muy parecido a las islas del Caribe.
