  1. It depends on the level being taught, I think that if it's your third year learning the language everything should be in the language you're learning, you should know enough vocabulary by then to understand what's being spoken. For instance, my English teacher always spoke English with us (even outside of class) even though he has lived in Portugal for 20 years and speaks Portuguese really well, as a matter of fact we only know he speaks Portuguese because he participated in the show "Who wants to be a millionaire?"
  2. One thing is reading, another is comprehending what you read. Maybe you should try reading slower next time I suffer from the same problem, I read too fast and sometimes I can't even remember what I read, my mind just turns off while looking at the pages... I need to work on my focus.
  4. Hi, welcome to the forum! I'm also using Duolingo to learn German, what's your experience so far? I really like the exercises and the way they approach language learning
  5. I think it depends, women are more social, that's given but my favorite authors are mostly men. It might depend on the kind of literature I like as I'm not into romantic novels and prefer fantasy or history related books. In Portugal the most notorious writers are two male poets: Fernando Pessoa and Camões. I don't know any female writer in my language as famous as those two... but it's not a field I know much about.
  6. It's an ok way to test your vocabulary and improve it. I don't find it that fun to play though, it might be to other people. I think that you might learn new words but it is not enough to become a good speaker of the language but it works well as an auxiliary exercise. I think that Duolingo takes the cup as the most exciting App to learn new languages
  7. Hello and welcome to the forum! Nice to have someone from Ghana, isn't French an Official language of Ghana? I think that it is a former French colony but I might be wrong, please tell me more!

  12. Welcome, it's very nice to have someone here who knows so many languages... I guess you could teach and learn new languages at the same time! I'll see you around!
  13. I don't really get stressed before an Exam, everything is fine until I see the sheet of paper in front of me... then I get nervous and focused on the task at hand. I guess that's good in a way because I can study while being relaxed but it's bad because while taking the exam being nervous does not help with concentration.
  14. That's really good, we have trouble seeing our future self as something more than a stranger. We should see our future self as our best friend and do favors for him like we should do to any other friend. Be nice to our future self and be thankful of all the good things your past self did until you got where you are today, without your past self you wouldn't be anyone. You should also forgive yourself for the bad things that happened in the past. Remember: Do something good for your future self today. Forgive your former self for making mistakes, procrastination and so on. Thank your former self for doing something that got you closer to your life goals.
  15. That happens with me as well. I had a teacher in a language institute that only speaks English with his students despite living in Portugal for over 20 years, we only know he speaks perfect Portuguese because he went to the Portuguese "who wants to be a millionaire?". He's a really cool guy (in his mid thirties) and a great teacher. He said we should keep practicing our English with him even if he hasn't been our teacher for over 6 years.

In Portugal, we are used to receiving and serving foreigners, we speak their language most of the time so it's nice to see a foreigner trying to speak our language instead of English, we will do our best to understand you and make sure you understand us. We love tourists that try to speak our language so don't feel bad if you speak Portuguese with a weird accent, we welcome you either way.
