What is your favorite Shakespearian work (plays, sonnets, etc.)?
Oogles replied to jodiann12's topic in English Literature
I liked King Lear and Richard III. I always loved dark stories more than ones that revolve too much around love. -
Maybe you should pick up a different genre? or watch a movie or series version of the book before reading it. You may just be picking up books that are not as interesting as you thought they were.

My first was Alice in Wonderland. I was really young at the time so I couldn't understand the deeper meaning nor the the symbolism of it but I definitely enjoyed reading that book.

Can you recommend any good biographies/autobiographies?
Oogles replied to g2narat's topic in English Literature
I would second Anne Frank's Diary, it was a very good book filled with the emotion of a younger girl. It was quite sad to realize the reality of it though. -
Sherlock Holmes. I always found him to be one of the best characters I've ever read I grew up reading his books and now I'm playing games of Sherlock Holmes and watching movies and series too. :shy:

What are your thoughts on google translate?
Oogles replied to Cutler4Life's topic in Translations (Theory & Practice)
Google Translation sucks, especially with Asian languages. Whenever I try to google translate anything from English to my mother tongue and vise versa, I always end up dying with laughter. Not like I can complain with it being free though. -
When did you start to learn a second language?
Oogles replied to cbintz's topic in Language Learning
Since pre-school. The Philippines has a mandatory English language subject since pre-school until College. Basically as long as you're in school, you'll have to attend English classes. -
Do you mix your language and English when having conversation?
Oogles replied to whnuien's topic in Language Learning
This is actually pretty common in our country to the point that we have an official name for it. We call it Taglish lit. Tagalog-English. Personally I don't mean to use it but there are some words in English that I can't say or don't know in Tagalog, so I end up using English words instead. -
Do you ever forget some words in your native language?
Oogles replied to Qamra's topic in Language Learning
This happens to me all the time and to make matters worse I didn't even know I forgot what the word is until I needed to write a paper for school. LOL! It's weird when you have to ask your professor to translate from English to your language and you get asked if you didn't live in your country since you were young and you actually grew there and have never left the country since birth. LOL! -
The most suitable language for swearing ?
Oogles replied to linguaholic's topic in Language Learning
This question is fun! I would say Latin, the old one. How awesome would that sound if you were to start swearing in Latin and people would think you're possessed. -
I do this with Japanese and Korean songs. I think I learn them faster this way cause I've always been the type to memorize quicker when I sing them in a tone. :shy:

Focusing on reviewing notes is never easy to do, especially for those people who are like me and has no interest in tossing extra time in reviewing notes at home. But if I feel like I really need to study then I just tell myself that I should just suffer for a little bit rather than repeat the grade again and suffer longer. :bored:

French sounds really sexy... on the other hand British standard sounds very regal. I like both of them a lot but I lean more towards British standard. There's something about their accent that makes it delightful to hear.

How often do you check your dictionary?
Oogles replied to sos's topic in English Language | Discussion
I don't really open dictionaries when I see uncommon words. I use it in context and in a way I "get" what they mean, but if I really can't get it then that's the time that I bust out a dictionary and look it up. This happens pretty rarely though. -
Great quotes from great individuals from the past.
Oogles replied to CeliVega's topic in English Language | Discussion
"It's never too late to be what you might have been." - George Eliot "Imagination rules the world." - Napoleon Bonaparte "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." - Oscar Wilde These are the ones that I always remember well. I seem to remember Mark Twain has a quote about dogs but I can't remember how it goes. -
Do you over use "LOL" when you write to your friends?
Oogles replied to Jaxter's topic in English Language | Discussion
Guilty as charged. I use "LOL" for just about anything and everything, after a sentence, before a sentence or even when I have nothing to say. -
Spelling & Usage Mistakes That Amuse You
Oogles replied to Baburra's topic in English Language | Discussion
I've seen a few of these during the course of my internet surfing career. Things like "Becouse," You're and Your or incorrect usage of tenses i.e. "I'm break your cup." But the one that had me spilling my guts out while laughing was a post from a FaceBook site that read "That akward moment when..." and that misspelling was repeated around 6 or 8 times. -
Is English part of your education?
Oogles replied to betita03's topic in English Language | Discussion
I'll testify to that. The Philippines has a mandatory English subject from pre-school to college. Basically if you live here, there's no way you aren't going to take an English subject while you're enrolled in a school unless you're only taking a vocational course (6 month long courses). -
I consider myself a moderate speed reader, but it depends on what I'm reading or what the purpose of my reading is. For example I'm reading a novel, then I would read slowly to take in all the information. But if I'm skimming for answers on google then I'll read faster.
