It would surely be easier if you were younger and had less things to worry about and maybe your mind would be sharper, but I wouldn't say it makes that much of a difference. I think it just looks daunting at first, but once you get so used to knowing the language that it becomes second nature, you'd wonder how you lived through decades without it. No matter what age you are, you can totally be proficient in any language that you will decide to learn. It's all up to your desire and persuasion to it.
