  1. I had a pen pal but not in a foreign language class. Having a pen pal of the same language as your foreign language class could be very beneficial. Since they know their own language they could help you improve as you write to them. I certainly wish I had a pen pal in my foreign language class.
  2. I found this game very fun to play. It helps you get your feet wet by getting a gist of what various languages sound like. I Got up to 500+ then lost all my lives.
  3. That is crazy! I am really jealous, I know I will never get to his level. I'm even more amazed that he's only seventeen years old. I remember hearing about a guy in the UN being able to speak over 30 languages.
  4. The hardest part is speaking for me. For me, i'm scared i'm saying the wrong pronunciation half the time. I find it way easier to write and read since it's just letters. When speaking the language and saying the wrong words by accident, you could be easily misunderstood.
  5. I was in a class with around 30 students. It was a pretty big class for just one teacher. I didn't mind having other students to learn a new language since you could always ask them for help if you need. The teacher was busy most of the time, so we had to rely on each other sometimes.
  6. Learning a new language can have so many good advantages. For one, it helps you assimilate into a new culture. You don't get a huge culture shock, can learn how and why people do the things they do by communicating with them. Another thing is that it is proven to promote brain function.
  7. I think it should be mandatory for students to take a foreign language class. When these students take such classes, they are more prepared in the real world with whatever job they take. You encounter all sorts of people of different cultures and languages. Equipping them with some familiarity with these languages can greatly benefit them in those situations.
  8. My high school Spanish really inspired me to learn the Spanish language. She had such a passion to teach us that it amazed me. She was one of those teachers who care more about teaching rather than money aspect. She took her time/resources to help us all individually. I've never had a teacher like that ever since.
  9. I too only know two languages. I'm hoping to learn Chinese as a third. So far I know English and have learned Spanish. I'm not the best at speaking Spanish, but i'm still improving. I think learning Chinese will be an even harder task.
  10. I find it very difficult to hold off on talking for such long periods. I talk everyday to all sorts of people since i's part of my job. The longest time I can think of without uttering a word was one day. I probably stayed home the whole day and was on the computer/playing games.
  11. I crack myself up every time I say the word Doodle. I am a native English speaker if you are wondering. There's just something about it that makes it so unique. The word just rolls off your tongue whenever you say it.
  12. I never thought of 4 Pictures 1 Word as an app to learn. I used to play it all the time and gotten pretty far in the game. Being a native English speaker can make you take many things for granted. I'm going to download this game again and hopefully it will indeed help expand my vocabulary.
  13. My first Spanish lesson was in high school in Spanish 1. Our teacher was born and raised in Mexico, but then moved here to the United States. I'm pretty sure she knew what she was talking about since she grew up learning the language. She was always so passionate about teaching our class it prompted me to take Spanish 2 the following year. It's too bad I don't even remember half the things she taught us.
  14. I took two years of Spanish classes at my high school. My Spanish classes didn't really focus on actually being able to speak fluently, we just buzzed through the material since we had deadlines to maintain. I don't remember much since it was so long ago for me. I think it's because I stopped learning and practicing after my second year. If I just kept to it for all four years, i'm pretty sure I would have become fluent.
  15. They are effective, but not as much as you think they are. Online tutorials can be free and don't require you traveling outside your home. I find learning a language face to face with a teacher greatly improves your ability. If you have questions you can directly ask since you have a teacher.
  16. I mainly have the mentality that learning this new language is going to help me out one day even though I don't realize it. I kept this mentality when learning Spanish and now i'm fluent. Learning Spanish did indeed help me out one day. I was walking around in an area where Spanish is spoken more than English. I saw an old lady who needed medical attention and she only spoke Spanish. I was able to help her and call an ambulance.
  17. Back when I visited my relatives in the Philippines when I was a kid I got lost in the mall. I was around 10 years old and I strayed away from my mother in a busy mall in a foreign country. I asked a police officer in Tagalog to help me find my mother, and after a while we eventually found her. If I didn't know how to speak I probably would have been an orphan that day.
  18. I just asked my parents what my first words were, and they said it was something along the lines of "howooed". I was around 7 months old when I said my first word. They said I was probably trying to say my dad's name since his name is Harold.
  19. Aluin. It also is a Filipino word meaning to comfort. I'm Filipino myself so it's only natural to choose a word of my own culture. Good luck to whoever is next.
  20. In the area that I live, learning Spanish would make my life easier. Majority of people speak Spanish and I forgot everything I learned in Spanish class. It takes me forever to buy get things since my vocabulary is so limited. Funny thing is that I look Hispanic, so everyone I encounter starts off by speaking in Spanish.
  21. I started learning Spanish in 8th grade when I was 15 years old. I've forgotten most of the content i've learned, but i'm hoping to learn it again.
  22. I would really like to learn Chinese or Spanish they are widely used languages. I live in an area where Spanish is used more than English, so that can benefit me a lot whenever I go out. I'd also like to move to China when I get older, learning Chinese would be the best thing to do.
  23. I live in the USA and we still have to take English courses. Every year in school I was always in an English course, 1-12th grade. Now that i'm in college, I have an prerequisite that requires me to take at least 2 semesters of English.
  24. The word "set" has a lot of meanings. Another word that I can think of that has a lot of meanings is "charge". You can get charged for a crime, set of an explosive charge, or even take charge. There's probably so many more than i'm missing.
  25. Kamusta! I'm also a fellow Filipino hoping to learn a great deal here. I'm also new to the site as well, so hopefully we can learn some new things together.
